Imperial man shoots himself in the head while teaching firearm safety
12:09 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 22, 2009

(KMOV) -- An Imperial man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head while teaching his girlfriend firearm safety.
According to Sheriff Oliver Boyer, deputies responded to 4307 Rock Valley Court in Imperial, Missouri on Friday for an accidental shooting. According to the investigation, 40-years-old James Looney was teaching his girlfriend firearm safety.
According to the witness, Looney would show the different safety mechanisms, put the gun to his head, and ask if the gun would go off. Looney apparently did this with two other weapons and varied safety mechanisms, before the last one went off.
Looney was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning.
According to witnesses, Looney was going to take his girlfriend to the shooting range the next day, but insisted on firearm safety the day prior.
Authorities said alcohol was a factor.

Ya gotta admit, it's a crude but effective safety demonstration.

And, just to beat JimC to the punch, yet another reason why you should never ever never ever never ever drink.

Damn it, how many times do you gotta be told:

If you're going to play with the guns while drinking, unload them before drinking and lock the ammo up in the safe.

Fools...

I, myself, have never met or handled an unloaded firearm.

Condolences to his family and friends...

but there is one positive from a firearms safety standpoint -- he made the rest of us safer since he'll no longer be a danger to the rest of us at the range!

complacency and stupidity are probably the two greatest dangers out there!

So that's what I'm forgetting to do when I teach safety? I should incorporate that. :bang:

He insists on safety training before going to the range and ends up killing himself in the process. Wow and <facepalm> do about cover it. What an idiot!

It sounds like a much harsher instructor certification process than MADFI or AAFCI... (you fail, you die)

In all seriousness, before I had enough alcohol to make me that foolhardy I would be barfing, unconscious, or dead from alcohol poisoning.

What a colossal waste.
