Post subject:  Don't Do That.
When you go to the airport there are some things that you should keep in mind... like the fact that you are wearing body armor and have a weapon on you.

Police arrested a man Sunday who tried to pass through Indianapolis International Airport security wearing body armor and carrying a pellet gun.

Carlos M. Delay, 19, Indianapolis, was arrested on an initial charge of disorderly conduct at an airport, according to an Airport Police Department report.
Security agents stopped Delay at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday as they say Delay tried to pass through screening wearing an armored vest and carrying the pellet gun.
Delay, 3900 block of East 31st Street, told officers he wore the vest and carried the gun for protection while he escorted his mother and cousin to their flight.
Delay's relatives' flight took off before authorities could interview them, according to the report.
Delay, a senior at Arsenal Tech, said he had forgotten that he was wearing the bulletproof vest and was carrying the pellet gun in his waistband.

He said it was the first time the pellet gun had been taken out of his house. He said he sometimes wears the vest.

“I was just carrying it to be carrying it,’’ Delay said.

Airport police Chief Bill Reardon said Delay told police he wanted to have some protection at the airport in case there were terrorist threats.

Delay was charged with disorderly conduct for the commotion the incident caused, Reardon said.

He spent five hours in custody and one hour in a police lock-up at the airport before being released.

“I see now that what I did was wrong but I don’t think it was as big a thing as the police made it out to be,’’ Delay said.

Speaking as a former airport security person (Oct. 2001-Jan. 2002) , this guy's an idiot. He's lucky he didn't get the full "felony-stop" treatment, as did an unlucky (and/or stupid) businessman during my time there. It seems he had a disassembled staple gun in his bag. And we were specifically looking for "parts of disassembled firearms" that day- ever notice how much the magazine spring on a staple gun resembles the recoil spring on a pistol to a guy looking at an x-ray screen? :lol:

Back many years, I was boarding a plane, and watched the CRT screen as my camera bag went thru the X-ray machine. Black checkering on one of the long lenses looked remarkably like the grip on a pistol to me.
The security guard must have thought likewise, so they took the bag, opened it up, and searched it. The took out everything in the bag and still were looking for something in it when it was totally empty.
This was way back when I was in college, I was a bit of a smartass back then, but I was smart enought to stay silent.

The repacked the bag, and sent me on my way thru to the gate.

Something in this story doesn't add up. I fly out of the Indianapolis airport every other week and there is no way a non ticketed person gets to "escort" anyone to their plane. Just like at MSP you must present your boarding pass just to get in line to walk thru the metal detector (and "sniffer" machine at Indy)and have your character and dignity impuned.
This clown must have really pushed it to make it to the point that they stopped him.

On the other hand.. at least I was safe from terrorist attacks with him on patrol.

There is a provision for people assisting a relative who is elderly, disabled, etc. to recieve a "gate pass"- basically, it's a note from the ticket agent from the airline in question, authorizing the assisting person to escort a passenger to the gate. Fairly common, at least when I was working there.

Anyone with a gate pass gets the usual treatment at the checkpoint, of course. Complete with complimentary impugnment. :wink:

While it may be legal and seemingly not a bad idea given the present condition, we get a lot of hard looks when we transport it on a plane. There are vests that we cannot check and we carry on - we get asked a lot of questions.

Specifically in Dulles VA - I had a really significantly UBER Cool vest with me for a demo for a Federal LE Agency - I got the twice over, and after that the bare lightbulb treatment.

You would have to be some sort of mental defective to bring a gun on your person to the security checkpoint.

The funny thing about that is... That quote is almost exactly what KSTP said about brining a gun to the State Fair.

Something about going to a mental hospital instead of the fair. IIRC.

But in this case I agree 100%. Still I've heard plenty of examples where people "forget" they had it on them or in the bag.
Thats why for me shooting bags and carry-on bags never get multi tasked.

I do this all the time, when my elderly mother comes to visit. I go to the shortest line at the ticket counter (usually the first class one) ,show them a copy of my Mom's ticket and ask for a pass to pick her (or drop her off) at the gate. No problem, but as Jeremiah pointed out you go through the same screening process as a ticketed passenger.
