While out scouting around my deer stand this weekend I came along a couple of tasty looking partridge on the trail. I was only armed with my Walther .40S&W but figured what the heck, why not. From ten yards away I squeezed off four rounds between the two while they contentedly bobbed thier heads up and down ignoring me as partridge do and cleanly removed their heads from thier bodies at the base of the neck. I was right too, they were mighty tasty. HeHeHe, I'll be damned if that Walther doesn't have purposes other than self defense 8)

Both birds had their heads removed neatly at the base of the neck, no damage to the breasts at all.

Is .40 a sufficiently large enough caliber for legal bird hunting? Is it legal to hunt with a semi-auto pistol? I've never hunted with a handgun before, so I really don't know.

Is a .40 enough?? I would think you would need the extra "knock down" power of a .45 for partridge!!

They're comin' right for us!

1. Great shooting! :D

2. I havn't look recently but is used to be illegal it use anything but a shotgun or a 22 for many non-waterfowl birds. I never looked at partridge but it was for pheasent. It's also illegal for small game etc. :o Not that I'd have ever used a 357 on a possum or a 10mm on a bunny rabbit.... Now, this could have changed in the last year or two.

I'll add that this never made much sense to me either. It'd be good practice, just require non-expanding ammo (FMJ etc.).

As far as I know, there is NOTHING more dangerous than a partridge on an attack vector...

Since there is no open season on "Partridge" in MN, just grouse, I believe you are in trouble  Too bad you posted on an open forum!

Oh Yeah? I'd put up the "Killer Rabbit" from Monty Python's "The Holy Grail" against any partridge! (Unless it's Danny Partridge (Bonnaduce?), I wouldn't want to toe off against him).

Well... Yeah....I mean if you have a "killer rabbit" with huge pointy teeth then you have a definite issue on your hands. I mean, who these days, has a "Holy Handgrenade of Antioch" lying around for defense against rabbits. And have you ever read the user manual on one of those? You would need and 11th century scribe to decipher the bloody thing. I do agree with you on Bonnaduce...dude is just plain scary!

Well, there is a season on Hungarian Partridge, and handgun shooting is prohibited, except for .22.

On the other hand, the Chukar partridge may be hunted without a license:

...So I can only assume it was a Chukar. :)

Good shootin'. Now get the book:
