OK --- I'm bored. So let's talk about the best gun flicks.

Not just any movie with a gun in it, like a Dirty Harry or a James Bond movie (unless you're partial to really big or really small guns). But a movie in which the plot revolves around a specific gun or the use of guns. And not just any kind of gun. The Guns of Navaronne doesn't count. I mean handguns, rifles, shotguns --- that sort.

I just saw "Shooter," which would rate high on my list.

Then there's "The Professional" (Luc Besson, 1994) with Jean Reno as a NYC hitman who goes to Gene Kelly movies in his spare time.

And of course: James Stewart in "Carbine Williams." Classic.

The 1996 Romeo + Juliet is wild. It's the original Shakespeare dialog but set in a strange modern-day setting, "Verona Beach". Leonardo DeCaprio as Romeo I think carries a Para-Ordnance. Everybody's open-carrying pimped-out race guns of one kind or another, in the place of swords and daggers in the original version. Very trippy.

I enjoyed "Shooter" also, not as good as the book, but then most movies do not mesure up. Try the movie "Heat" lots of guns and one hell of a shootout, they even have to RELOAD! Also if you are into history, take a look at the movie "Open Range" it's a close to real life shoot out with black powder guns. I think it's well done.

Just watched "Heat" this weekend. And yes they do reloads! It skips around and seems to go on forever. Not the best movie but no RoboCop type guns. A will watch again movie.

Has anyone seen John Wayne's "The Shootist?"

Except for Costner's 16-shooter SA and the guy who flies 6 feet through the air after being shot with a shotgun. Still a good movie.

I like "Way of the Gun" for the guns, it's pretty bleak otherwise.

"The Proposition" is great cowboy movie with a number of wonderful old guns. Very hard to find.

Just saw this one yesterday --- definitely a keeper. Makes me want to check out more of Jean Reno's movies.

This is supposed to be a good movie too. Haven't seen it yet:

A very fun movie, lots of twists and turns. It was on the IFC channel some time back.

I thought the British were not supposed to have guns.

The ending was a hoot.

Definitely "Heat", and possibly "Miami Vice". Michael Mann likes to include some pretty kick-ass adrenaline-pumping scenes involving shoot-outs, and he will go to great lengths to make sure that the scenes are realistic (meaning that the guns don't have an endless supply of ammo...the characters will actually re-load).

I use the street scene in Heat to test out my surround system when making adjustments. On the set, microphones were placed properly to allow a realistic echo-effect on the gunshot sounds given that the shoot-out sequence takes place in the midst of tall buildings. The actors were trained and supervised by a former SAS agent.
