Among other really dumb things I witnessed at this weekends gunshow was the sale of CCW Badges. I cannot for the life of me think of the benefit for possesing one of these badges. In fact I think it is a very BAD idea to draw any attention to yourself, and an even worse idea to draw attention to yourself from LEO's.

If you've ever been on Glocktalk.com, you may have read some of their opinions. It's pretty funny.

No, in general I don't think anyone should have these. But, my friend who happens to be black says he'll probably get one to avoid the "Black man with a gun" type hysteria. The first time he open carried he was wearing a SWAT shirt and SWAT hat. These old ladies were talking "I wonder if he's in SWAT". They were looking for his badge and saw his gun "Yup, he's in SWAT".

... or, for that matter, to draw attention from a wanted criminal who might not know that you're not either a cop, or looking to arrest him.

A very bad idea.

You've gotta be kidding me, right? Is this like a badge like a police looking badge or like a nametag type of badge???

No, I'm not kidding, and it is a police type badge.

It looks like this:

And, no, I can't recommend it, either.

Now that I'm done banging my head against the desk...

So is this for the guys that couldn't get through and become LEO's themselves so they have to pretend to be one or something??? I actually find it scary. What kind of mindset wants to have something like that?

Someone's gotta get their junior g-man badge or something...

In a similar vein, I'm a member of the local police reserve. We are volunteers, not licensed PD's, not by any stretch. We have almost identical uniforms as the police unit we're serving, sans sidearm.
Because we look so much like PD at first glance, including a real badge, we are cautioned to only wear our uniforms to events we are working- not out in general public, since having people thinking your a cop can be a good thing, or it can be a not good thing.

I could see a potential benefit to a CCW badge if they were issued by the state and numbered to the permit. It may potentially prevent a CCW holder from being shot by a cop.

These things that can be bought by anyone are just toys for wannabees.

Actually "...stinkin badges..." was originally from Treasure of the Siera Madre.

Not to be a stickler, but it is originally from the "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" - 1948, although Brooks used it as well... ...here is the original quote:

"Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges!"

That badge looks good enough to be charged with "impersonating an officer", which I believe could be a felony. Wannabe is the right term. I say give them a choice...badge OR firearm.

Well ... I'd probably pick one up if it came with a secret decoder ring and a (silver) whistle.

Could keep it all on my bat utility belt. 8)
