I was in Wall-Mart in Eden Prairie yesterday. Went with a buddy to get keys cut for his new vehicle. So we are standing there at the counter and I notice a sign hanging from the ceiling. I don't remember the exact wording but the gist of it was that it is illegal to leave a loaded firearm where a child can reach it. Cool. I have no problem with that sign. Then I get to looking around. Up and down several isles I wander and I don't see any firearms. No pistola, no rifle, no scatterguns. Nada. I did eventually see a very small locked cabinet with some shotgun ammo in it. So....why the sign?

I believe some Wal-Marts use to sell guns or atleast air rifles. They may not anymore.

Last time I was there the ammo wasn't behind the counter or locked up. I missed the sign though.

I think I've seen some version of that sign in every gun shop I've recently been in. It's true, it IS a law, and it's the most common way I remember reading about for kids to get loaded guns. It's also 100% preventable.

I think the sign is a relic from when they used to sell guns and it usually hangs over the sporting goods dept desk. I'd bet that Wal Mart maintains their FFL. here's the law on the subject:

624.7162 FIREARMS DEALERS; SAFETY REQUIREMENTS.
Subdivision 1. Firearms dealers. For purposes of this section, a firearms dealer is any
person who is federally licensed to sell firearms from any location.
Subd. 2. Notice required. In each business location where firearms are sold by a firearms
dealer, the dealer shall post in a conspicuous location the following warning in block letters
not less than one inch in height: "IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE OR LEAVE A LOADED
FIREARM WHERE A CHILD CAN OBTAIN ACCESS."

I wouldn't credit it to some anti-gun conspiracy. I think it's a legally required Public Service Announcement type sign.

Yup. That would be the sign.

Feel good sign that makes them feel better about selling ammo.
