I just saw a promo commercial for an upcoming new mythbusters episode.
Is it lethal to store your ammo in the oven?
Can you believe this! Now I have to watch this one.

The answer is no it won't go off. It is a repeat! It is a good one to watch.

If it is modern ammunition (smokeless powder) the most it should do is burn rapidly generating a high amount of pressure.

There was an article a number of years ago, I believe in American Rifleman, where they built a 4 ft by 4 ft box of 1/2" sheetrock and cooked off rounds inside.
They went through all kinds of handgun rounds and most of the rifle rounds (I don't remember if they did 50 BMG) and never got one of them to penetrate the sheetrock, just dents.
I've been meaning to try a 30 Cal ammo can full of scrap ammo that I have in a fire pit to see what happens. What I expect is that the first couple of rounds that cook off will spring the seals on the can and that the rest of the rounds will just cook off like popcorn and never leave the can. I don't expect them all to go off at once, but I am going to stand well back!

Hatcher's Notebook remains the best source of info on this sort of stuff.
