Post subject:  "Clean Up The Neighborhood" Gathering
I thought these Ohio folks had a catchy theme and a worthy project to help bring attention to the legality of open carry.

While I'm not a great fan of open carry, this looks like an neat opportunity to educate both neighborhood residents and police!

Yeah I saw a group do that a few months ago on the news, it's a great idea.

I seem to remember seeing some videos about a year ago on the Free State Project doing the same thing.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, or some similar public-benefit volunteer work.

I really like this quote though "The police department exists to enforce the laws as they are written. They don't have to like them but they do have to enforce them as they are on the books. I think this would be a much better idea than standing around a gazebo flaunting our guns with little kids standing around. The general public would see that we were organized and that we could do a service to the community.The only issue is where this could be done. I'm certain there are restrictions to doing a clean up on major freeways due to the danger in traffic but possibly it could take place in a neighborhood that could use some picking up.

I take issue with the tone here. Why is it "flaunting," and of what significance is the fact that there are kids around?

Regardless, the park and shoreline at Lake Harriet was filthy with people's trash -- that'd be a fine place for a cleanup.

After Andrew pointed it out, I think there's a difference in perception here. We're just a bunch of folks having a gathering with burgers, brats, etc... what? the guns? yeah, that's legal ... But it wasn't as if everyone went all OC crazy and strapped on AR pistols and cowboy rigs. We just went about our business and happened not to conceal.

That's a great concept. I worry about how it would be spun if we're not careful. "See, they're so scared to come into these inner city neighborhoods to help clean up that they bring their guns and flaunt them.

Our opposition will spin it any way they want, we just need to be careful to maximize the positives and keep an eye on the negatives.

Whittier is "inner city" . . . . I am not going into a 'hood that is more 'hood-ly. There is an assumption there that people who carry are all suburbanites and that just isn't true.


Back on topic, we went to the fireworks at Powderhorn park (which is also one of our neighborhoods) and the park got absolutely trashed. That'd be a fine place to do some work of this nature too.

And that's what the GRG was all about :!: It was an opportunity to meet friends and put faces with names. The OC part was up to the individual, many of the kids around were the children of the participants. I can absolutely assure anyone that those that attended were in no way flaunting weapons :!: In fact I didn't see even one gun that was out of its holster. What we were was a diverse group of people enjoying each others company, and exercising our rights as defined by our PERMIT TO CARRY A PISTOL.

His area is bounded by I-94 to the east, Lowry Ave. to the north, Farview Park to the south, and Lyndale Ave. to the west, about 9 city blocks.

another alternative would be to formally do one of those 'adopt a highway' things where a sign is posted about it. That would send a message even when people aren't out there cleaning

Except we aren't an organization. We are just family folks who exercise a right. There is a certain ammount of strength in just being citizens acting like citizens (rather than subjects) & not being an organization. Unfortunately, it also means that adopt a highway wouldn't be easy to . . . .

I don't think it's an either/or proposition: either we have fun activities like picnics, or we have volunteer events.

We can do both. Variety is good, and each has its place. Volunteer events can also be fun, even though work may be involved.

Regarding the picnic, I think it was good for the public to witness a normal and uneventful event with guns (and children) present. Any "think of the children" types strolling past could see that the kids were not harmed or warped by the presence of guns, and no gunplay erupted over burnt brats or condiment squabbles.

ETA: "burnt brats" refers to bratwursts, not children being harmed...
