I literally drove by that exact spot (North end of Beaver lake heading east) about 15 minutes before the attack on my way to work.
My wife occasionally walks around that lake during the school year after the kids are at school.
We were talking about this attack this morning, and she still won't even consider carrying (a gun). :bang:
I guess I don't want her to carry something she's not comfortable having, but I would certainly feel a lot better with psychopaths like this running around out there.

As an aside, the same day I believe, some woman was sexually assaulted while walking a wooded trail in a Burnsville park.

I have a lack of sympathy for those who choose to not take any means to protect themselves, not that I think the attack it right, or that you "shouldn't" always have to be able to protect yourself, sadly you should always be ready. Atleast she lived to tell the tale.

If they won't carry, can you at least get them to carry pepper spray??

Dude, that's a little harsh, don't ya think.
Would you say that to this lady or her family?

It is a little harsh. Look at it from her point of view:

The woman, 57, who has walked around the lake for more than 20 years...

Some folks don't think it's necessary to prepare against long-odds events like violent attacks. This lady had walked around the lake probably thousands of times without getting attacked, after all.

I'm one to encourage folks to consider carry to defend themselves. At the end of the day some aren't candidates to carry, as some aren't candidates to drive a car, or fly a plane, or........etc. A big dog might be a good alternative. Companionship and big teeth 8) I have a Yorkie, and a .45 ACP; so I guess I travel with a companion with big teeth   :D

Also, some just can't bring themselves to the point of being able to, potentially, "take a life". I have nothing against them, it is a choice for each of us to make. For me, I will carry.

I think this is very true. I've had people ask me for information or advice on carrying and one of the first things I tell them is that they have to really think about the idea of taking a human life (even to save their own) and whether they think they could. I tell them it's an amazing amount of responsibility legally, ethically, emotionally, etc. Even if they think they would be able to, I think there are those that won't actually be able to pull the trigger when/if the time comes.

I was a Scout and take the "Be Prepared" motto to heart. I sure do wish more did. When i lived in St. Paul 20 years ago i would not walk around those lakes without at least my hunting knife in my pocket. These days i would be carrying instead. Different times, different tools to protect myself.

With all of the attacks being reported i wish more people would take care to protect themselves.
