How many are going to the open carry picnic? Not me, I think the pot is being stirred against us.

I'm not, but only because I'm not going to be in the state.

I'm not, as I've said before, a big fan of routine open carry. But these events -- where it's been carefully set up by people who know what they're doing, and who arrange things in advance so that the likelihood of an isolated incident is very low -- are not only fun, but good, effective activism.

I guess I'm curious how you think the pot is being stirred against us?

Just caught a channel 11 story on this picnic. They pretty much opened the newscast with this story (2nd or 3rd story).

I normally don't watch Kare11 but the wife had it on in the background. I suddenly realized what the story was about and said "SHHHHHH!"

Now she's not talking to me

Edit: The story can be found online here: http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=822024&catid=391

Media Bias, Scaring people. Raising a issue that isn't a issue right now. Anti gun politicians creating a stir, I'm sure someone will say displaying a gun in public is wrong, law should be changed, etc etc

Many people not aware you can open carry a gun might freak out and give fuel to the anti's.

I don't think it's wise to do what they're doing. It could backfire on all of us.

You understand this is in Wisconsin, right? Further, this is the only way they can legally carry, right? What should they do, in your opinion? Nothing?

The article says, "...proudly displaying their guns on their hips. ..."

I may be "proud" of my firearms, but I don't carry to "display" it. This is not a classic car show.

If WI politicians feel that OC is alarming, they should support CC and issue permits.

I always ask why people are afraid of law abiding citizens carrying firearms. It's already been well disproven, has it not, that doing so isn't gonna turn the streets into the wild, wild west. The police won't have extra staff on hand. What are they afraid of?

I plan to be there, well behaved and abiding by the law.

Provided the right venue is chosen and well planned I think it will have a positive effect. Especially in Wisconsin where they don't have any other option at this point but to open carry I think it's a good idea. While I agree it has to be done carefully, I think the more people that see open carry is legal (whether in WI or MN) the better.

"proudly display" - Many people wear their BBQ rigs at these open carry events.

Anyway, I wrote the author:

Were you aware that these events also happen in the Twin Cities? I host one every year at the Lake Harriet Bandshell.

It's less controversial here, because we have a Carry Permit law, and every participant is a permit holder, whereas Wisconsin is one of only two states (Illinois being the other) that does not issue permits.

Let me know if you want more info.

Wow! A response already!

"chunkstyle",

Thanks for the note. I wasn't aware of that. How many folks to you get for your picnic? The one in Wisconsin is aimed at making a point. Is yours more recreational?

My response:

This year, we got about 60, including the principal authors of the carry law, Professor Joe Olsen of Hamline Law, and Attorney David Gross, former Minneapolis prosecutor. Also attending was State Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Delano), now a candidate for Governor.

Sure, we are there for recreation, but we also have our guns on openly, which are normally kept concealed. Both methods are, of course, allowed under Minnesota law. Our primary purpose is to show to any who pass by that folks with guns are perfectly normal people, that you would encounter every day.

I can surely get you invited to the next such event, if you so desire.

Awesome. Just awesome.

How cool is it that 60-80 people with guns in a Minneapolis park on a Sunday morning isn't news? :)

Andrew, I'm thinking of the lyrics from Alice's Restaurant (somewhat altered):

You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick…...

And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re....err...”just pals”

And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people Gathering. They may think it's an organization...

And can you, can you imagine fifty people, I said fifty people Gathering. They may think it's a movement. 8) 8) 8) 8)

And that's what it is, the Gun Rights Gathering “Movement”, and
all anyone has to do to join us is show up! :D :D :D :D :D

Eventually our numbers will be such that the MSM won't be able to ignore us.
