recieved this in my email 10/9/09 from campus security.

Quote:
This Personal Safety Alert is being shared with you by the Safety Education & Crime Prevention Unit of Minnesota State University, Mankato Security.

Robbery

At 11:02pm on 10/08/2009 Security and the Mankato Police Department responded to the report of a robbery that occurred in the arboretum area near Trafton East.

The victim reported that three males approached him and demanded he give them all of his valuables. One of the suspects attempted to strike the victim and the victim was able to fight him off. The other two suspects then attacked the victim together. All three suspects eventually fled the scene after taking some property from the victim. The victim reported not being injured during the assault.

The victim described the suspects as black males wearing dark colored jeans and dark “hoodies” with their faces covered. One suspect is described at 6’2” and the other two 5’10” and slender. All three suspected are estimated to be 13-15 years old.

The Mankato Police are investigating the incident.

** When possible, walk with others. When on campus, use the Security Safewalk Service by calling 389-2111.

Anyone with information about the above incident is urged to call Campus Security at 389-2111 or the Mankato Police at 387-8770.

Yeah, its a good thing campus is a carry-free zone. I guess these guys must have missed the sign about campus being a "violence free" zone.

They should add this to the Safety Alert: "Remember to always carry at least $20 in small bills so you don't piss off the robber and get hurt."

Usually this stuff did not bother me so much, but in the last year it seems to be getting worse. Seems like more and more stuff like this is happening.

What does everyone think of buying a collapsible asp to carry with me on campus? (yeah, i'm serious).

or other means of defense that would be allowed on campus? (pepper spray, tasers etc).

Or, don't get caught carrying on campus...

Whoops, did I say that?

There have been several incidents in Mankato resulting in similar descriptions of the assailants. More that likely the same group is responsible.

Totally a personal call. All depends on how well you can conceal, and how comfortable you are breaking the rules.

I would be an interesting report to see, Student expelled for protect himself..... I mean if you had to defend yourself, and did so on campus, they'd have to take action on you right?

Personally I think it would be interesting if EVERYONE started asking for escorts on campus, and they couldn't keep up with demand...

I was thinking about that. Calling for an escort at like 2:30 in broad daylight, and getting all of my friends to call as well.

Check your school's student handbook. Usually impact weapons are in there with guns, and it's not unlikely to be seen almost as seriously as a gun.

I'm a student at MSU Mankato, as well.

Here's the link to their official policy regarding weapons and firearms: http://www.mnsu.edu/policies/approved/w ... rearms.pdf I don't seen any definition of a weapon other than a firearm...

Yeah, I looked around on our school's website, and did not find much pertaining to impact weapons. I think I will more than likely buy a pepper spray device such as this one http://www.defensedevices.com/aspkeydefender.html

It looks like it can be flung around pretty well too.

Quote:
How extensive is rape among college women?
Exhibit 3 reports the extent of rape found in the NCWSV study. As shown,
2.8 percent of the sample had experienced either a completed rape (1.7 percent)
or an attempted rape incident (1.1 percent). The victimization rate was
27.7 rapes per 1,000 female students.
[...]
At first glance, one might conclude that the risk of rape victimization for
college women is not high; “only” about 1 in 36 college women (2.8 percent)
experience a completed rape or attempted rape in an academic year.
Such a conclusion, however, misses critical, and potentially disquieting,
implications. The figures measure victimization for slightly more than half a
year (6.91 months). Projecting results beyond this reference period is problematic
for a number of reasons, such as assuming that the risk of victimization
is the same during summer months and remains stable over a person’s
time in college. However, if the 2.8 percent victimization figure is calculated
for a 1-year period, the data suggest that nearly 5 percent (4.9 percent) of
college women are victimized in any given calendar year. Over the course of
a college career—which now lasts an average of 5 years—the percentage of
completed or attempted rape victimization among women in higher educational
institutions might climb to between one-fifth and one-quarter.18

They don't define all weapons. They broadly ban the "possession of any weapon." They further clarify the firearms issue in order to demonstrate compliance with the Permit to Carry law and MNSCU 5.21. The term "any weapon" is likely to be broadly interpreted, and school judicial councils are likely to follow that broad interpretation. You might want to chat with your Student Government about that policy. On its face the policy forbids even pepper spray. Some school higher ups have been known to take the position based on policy and selective application of a rule that women can carry pepper spray because they have a need for it, but men can't.
