Armed lawmaker stopped by police in Highland Park

Thomas Hackbarth, 58, was stopped in his car on Nov. 16 after a security guard saw him with a gun in the parking lot about 5 p.m., an hour after the clinic closed. Police ordered him out of his car at gunpoint and handcuffed and questioned him before taking his gun and letting him go.

Does anyone know any more details about this incident? Specifically:

  1. What was Hackbarth carrying that a security guard could see it across a dark parking lot? At a sufficient distance in low light, a snubby revolver in a holster may be indistinguishable from a cell phone. Was he carrying a stainless Redhawk or what?
  2. How was he carrying it? From the article, it sounds like he was openly carrying in his car and for the two seconds it took him to put on his coat. Perhaps an IWB holster would be more discreet?
  3. Why did the cops confiscate his gun and make him go to the police station to retrieve it?

In the article, Hackbarth is very magnanimous. I, too, understand why the security guard would call the cops but I don't understand why the cops took Hackbarth's gun. If he's legally carrying it, they should give it back to him and leave him be. Thoughts?

He was carrying a snub nose .38 spl in a OWB holster. The guard saw the gun on a security camera. The gun was clearly visible when he removed his coat. I think the concern was he was stalking this woman, and that's why they took his gun. I believe the story and video is on WCCO. Maybe someone can find the story and post it here. I'm not that good at such things.
