Post subject:  Just got back from Safety Commitee hearing

Been a while since I posted on here, couldn't find my old user name.

I was at the hearing today concerning HF1467 at the State Capital Office building. I was able to get their nice and early and found a open seat towards the back . Unfortunately I was seated in the middle Heather Marten's gang of cheerleaders. It was interesting to see how man cops were there, I am still not sure if they were supporting the bill or against it. It was interesting to me that the Top Cops all tended to be against it. Congrats to Mankato Chief of Police for being brave enough to stand up and support the measure.

My favorite thing was when Representative Cornish called the opponents the "Brady Bunch". They all gasped and talked like a pack of scared hens! Since I was in the middle i was trying to laugh quietly so as to not start a riot.

So does it look like it will have enough votes to pass?

It will almost certainly pass in both the House and the Senate, but Governor Dayton will veto the bill. They don't have enough votes to override the veto.

So, it's just for show.

Even if the Dayton vetos the bill, and there aren't enough votes for an override, those that vote against will own those vote(s) at election time.

The 7 DFL "no" votes are from:
Joe Mullery (DFL) - District: 58A, Minneapolis
Kerry Gauthier (DFL) - District: 07B, Duluth
Bill Hilty (DFL) - District: 08A, Finlayson
Sheldon Johnson (DFL) - District: 67B, St Paul
Carlos Mariani (DFL) - District: 65B, St Paul
Rena Moran (DFL) - District: 65A, St Paul
Linda Slocum (DFL) - District: 63B, Richfield

These are all, with the possible exception of Hilty, *strong* DFL districts - their vote will actually count *for* them.

Yup. There may -- I'm trying to find some -- swing districts available where a
"no" vote on the floor can work against sitting DFLers, but there aren't many, if any; the Republicans got the full benefit of the swing last year, and next year is break-even-or-lose for them.

Their only hope to get anything useful done on self-defense issues is to hold or regain a majority in 2014, and defeat Dayton. And that means years of work, with self-defense issues pushed from the grassroots up -- hundreds of activists attending caucuses and pushing the issues through at least the next two election cycles.

To generate any urgency, they need, for next year, the DFL to take over one or both houses (possible) and to attempt to nibble away at self-defense rights -- Mullery's "gun show loophole" bill. But note how quickly the Metrocrats backed away from him, last time around; gun issues are horrible for anti-self-defense DFLers, and risky for pro-self-defense DFLers.

That might generate enough real urgency.

The only good news in this for GOCRA is this gives them three and a half years to rebuild the organization -- which the even split of pros and antis at the hearing shows they need badly. Getting their supporters there early to get a slight majority of (largely unlabeled) supporters into the hearing room is the sort of trick that only works until somebody notices that the opponents had roughly the same numbers... just not inside the hearing room. Somebody noticed.

At this point, I don't think that even getting the bill through the House, much less the Senate, is anything close to a done deal -- there's three weeks left in the session, and the budget issues aren't settled. If the Republicans were willing to make serious concessions on the budget in return for a lack of veto on this bill, the only way Dayton would agree would be if he knew that it wouldn't reach his desk.

Yup; they will. And the committee was microcosm of the DFL side of the lege -- do you think that any of the DFLers on the committee have any reason to be worried that in their districts, votes against "Shoot First!" (sic) will be punished?
