Hi all,
I am pretty new here and wanted to introduce myself and ask a couple of questions.
My wife and I recently completed the carry course offered by the gentlemen at ShootingSafely. Our permits arrived 13 days after completing the application (including weekend). We are in Wright county and have nothing but good things to say about Sheriff Miller.
I am contemplating getting one of those "evil" black rifles, but can't seem to find any info on what's legal in Minnesota regarding collapsible stock, minimum barrel length, pistol grip, etc. Does anyone know where that kind of info can be dug up?

16" barrel is the minium, unless you get a BATF tax stamp for a short barreled rifle. Also the gun must be a minium of 26" overall in length. As far as the rest goes it's all good. (imho) The only thing you'll have to be carefull about is on an import gun like an AK, once you change something a certain number of parts must be made state side.

There are no special laws on "assault weapons" in MN except that they transfer using the rules for handguns. I believe you need the same purchase permit, although that's covered if you have a carry permit and are over 21.
MN has no special rules on barrel length, magazine capacity, etc., other than the usual ATF Federal rules. If you want to get into the full auto world MN only permits "curio and relic" weapons and doesn't permit silencers.
Minneapolis has an "assault weapons" ban but is prevented from enforcing it due to state preemption.
All told it's a pretty good state to be a firearms owner in, in spite of the foaming at the mouth of the metro democrats.

Pretty much anything to see on display at a firearms dealer will be legal for you to buy. They should also be knowledgable in lengths and such.
You have to jump through too many hoops for a dealer to just keep SBR's on the shelf.

Congrats and welcome to the forum!
You don't want one of those black rifles they will go out and shoot people by themselves.

If Paul had his AR at the class, that would be the best example I can think of.
More Federal than state.
Anyway, here is a link to the MN Law.
16" barrel Minimum length. You could have a 14" barrel, but permanently attach a 2" flash suppressor to it and still be legal.
The big thing with a rifle is that it still must also meet a 26" over all length to include barrel, action and stock.
I wish I could find the reference for that part. When I want to, I can't. When it's not important, then I constantly find it.

Thanks for the all of the info everyone, and the link FarmerJ. I suppose it is pretty obvious that anything in the local gunshop would be legal , but I have been looking at getting something custom.
OldDude, My wife still won't practice her "blue streak of swears" in the mirror, maybe gentlemen was the wrong term

I went and bought a Stag Lower receiver.
Now it's just a matter of getting the rest of the pieces for it.
Just felt like building mine instead of buying one.

If you really want a shorty without the hassle, you can also buy these babies which are classified as pistols. Just don't put a shoulder stock on them.
