Does anyone here think they can learn to shoot from a DVD?

How about from a bunch of DVDs?

Combat Pistol University

Combat Pistol University is unlike anything you've seen before - it's a complete program of 55 DVDs from the most talented artists and craftsmen in the field. We ship you 3 DVDs per month - keep them as long as you want, with no late charges! When you're ready for more, mail those DVDs back to us, and we'll send you the next 3 DVDs (you get up to 3 new DVDs each month).

With exciting, informative, well shot videos from names like Bill Wilson & Ken Hackathorn, Jerry Barnhart, Lenny Magill, Matt Burkett, Civilian Marksmanship Program, and G. David Tubb that you can keep as long as you want, the ability to cancel at any time, and with a low monthly price of just $11.47 for the first month, and $22.95 thereafter , this is a bargain that you can't afford to miss!

I hear "The Upsell Boogie" playing in the background.

That said, the DVD does sound entertaining.

"Learn to shoot," no. "Get some good information," "get training ideas," "get something to think about," sure.

It could be an interesting program, though a bit pricy for just ideas and things to think about. I get plenty of those just hanging out with you guys...

I think you could pick up tips and tricks. The difficulty would be getting the whole thing right and then practicing. I see a lot of room for watching the video, then practicing the new stuff but just slightly off. Kinda like the difference between seeing Isosceles stance and trying to imitate it yourself and having a good coach or instructor or friend point out why it works at recoil reduction or "turreting" or etc ...

The DVD's could lead to a lot of imperfect practice. And upselling. :-(

I was directed to the site as a source for a recommend DVD on hand plane and chisel sharpening, and I saw this, and thought folks might be interested.

There are some very good instructional videos available on that site. But I'd be surprised if all of them were. And even if all of the videos in their "University" series were of decent quality, taking a bunch of unrelated videos, by different people, with different approaches, and different aims, and throwing them together in a pile does not an effective course of study make.

For $23/month for a limit of 3 DVD's/month, I'd want to keep the DVD's.

Netflix is better than that: $17/month for 3 DVD's out at a time, exchange as often as you want plus unlimited movies on-line.

.

Well, Evan Tanner, former UFC MW champion learned how to fight mixed martial arts (MMA) in his shed from fighting video's, so who knows.

They teach everything else on dvd's. Why not shooting?

I don't see why you couldn't learn to shoot from a DVD. After all that how most of us learn; someone show us. However, if you don't do it correctly, there is no one to tell you that.

As Jeremiah said you could get other benefits from the videos too but I don't think one should use it as a substitute for actual coaching from a qualified instructor.

I suppose if you set the first ten at 20', the second ten at 30', the third ten at 40', and then have your brother-in-law whip the last twenty-five like frisbees across in front of you, you really can't help but get a little better.

Now, that's funny.

I admit it: I have a weak spot in my head for the shooting shows. It's one thing to read about Miculek, and another to watch him in action, even on tape. And some of the Clint Smith videos I've seen on Youtube have been cool; he's obviously a good teacher. I might even buy some at some point.

But turning an occasional impulse purchase into a monthly subscription? Yucko.

I believe a person can learn to shoot a firearm just as well as they an learn a new language by reading a book.

Oh, SNAP!

I'd say YES - if you watched the program, took notes, and then went to the range and practiced what you were learning.

A burning question in these debates is what do we mean by, "learning to shoot?" Techniques for sport competition are not necessarily the most effective for gunfighting.
