Sioux Falls school custodian fired for carrying gun
October 14, 2009

Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) — An elementary school custodian in Sioux Falls has been fired for bringing a loaded handgun to work.

Forty-four-year-old Louis Thompson of Hartford was arrested last Thursday after another employee at Garfield Elementary discovered the gun in Thompson's coat pocket. The incident led to a 10-minute lockdown at the school.

Thompson said he forgot that he had the gun in his pocket, and apologized. Sioux Falls police say that Thompson did not threaten anyone, and was nowhere near the gun at the time of his arrest.

Co-worker Jeff Palmer says Thompson was known for shooting skunks and other predators on his drive to work.

Thompson also could face a misdemeanor criminal charge for possessing the gun on school property.

Sad. This is a law that needs to change.

Sad but foolish mistake getting complacent with a pistol.

Another question here is why was the coworker going through his coat pockets.

Very sad.

What was the other employee doing in his coat though?

Exactly....while it's sad that he got fired for this, part of me almost thinks he deserves it for leaving a gun unattended at a school. That's just stupid.

This is the scenario I can picture:

The Coworker could be an anti-gun type who can't stand the fact that the (now fired) janitor is a pro gunner. Maybe he reads copies of "Guns and Ammo" on break. Maybe he wears firearms logo'ed, or pro 2A apparel to work. Maybe he's vocal in his support of 2A issues.

Whatever the case, it sticks in Coworker's craw. It burns him up... he can't stand the fact that this loon actually supports, stubbornly sometimes, the second amendment. The fact that he brings his views into school... well that just makes it so much worse. How DARE he even THINK of something as evil as a gun while around the impressionable young children.

So, Coworker finds reasons to "brush up" against Janitors coat. "I was hanging my jacket up and I had to push his aside-I felt an odd lump...", or "I needed my keys and it looked like my coat" or "[Convenient name goes here] said he had [item] in his coat for me, I thought it was his jacket."

Whatever the case, Coworker snoops out of spite and makes the find, then he makes up a cover story to justify his intrusion into Janitors privacy.

That's the scenario I can imagine.

Or maybe I'm just projecting suspicions about a coworker from my job...
