A .25-06 is a good "middle" cartridge. By that I mean, it takes deer and can take up to Elk (with good shot placement and closer ranges). It also does well with smaller animals (coyote, fox,...). And, if you get into reloading, it opens up to more bullet selection and loading options.
One other thing I like about it is it uses the same case as the .30-06 (as was mentioned) so if you ever decided to move up in caliber you could get a .30-06 and use the same cases as the .25-06 (just run them through sizer dies). Does require re-loading equipment, but basic stuff isn't that expensive. Just my .02 c worth.
