I went out hunting this last weekend and did something a little new, interesting, and really stupid. (Not the dangerous kind of stupid.) I was hunting down on a friend's farm in southwest Minnesota. We got in on Saturday morning, got all our stuff on and got ready to hunt. I was ready to head out, so I went and opened up the gun case to grab my shotgun. I picked the lower half of the shotgun up out of the case, checked the lenses of the scope and checked the safety. I pulled the cap (I don't know what it's properly called) out of my pocket to screw the barrel to the lower half. Then I opened up the case again to get the barrel of my shotgun. Picked up the rifle that was next to it, looked under it, then set it down again. Then I closed the case, opened it again, and took another look inside. I looked up at my buddy with my "I'm really stupid" look.

"What, did you forget your gun?"

Me holding up the lower half of my shotgun, "not all of it, just half."

I managed to leave the barrel of my shotgun in the trunk of my car. It was embarrassing enough having to explain it to my friend, more embarrassing having to explain it to the owner of the farm (family friend) and asking if I could borrow his shotgun. And I was worried about leaving the little cap cap at home.

I nearly did that turkey hunting last spring. The last thing I load is always my gun because I don't like leaving the gun sitting in the car while I go back and forth from the house.

I was about ½ a mile away when I remembered.
