Would my carry permit count towards the FAS class requirement necessary for me to get a deer license?

No.

Quote:
Anyone born after 1979 is required to have a FAS Certificate
to hunt with a firearm

Other states are more strict and have different age cutoffs.

The only shortcut is a military ID:

Quote:
A person who has successfully completed basic training in the United
States armed forces is exempt from the range and field day exercise
portion of firearms safety hunter education training, They must complete
the firearms safety training classroom portion, home study course or
on-line adult course the same as all others born after December 31,
1979. They must provide proof of basic training, i.e. Discharge papers
(DD214), or current military identification to the instructor conducting
the course exam. This safety training certification will be valid
throughout the US.

The home-study is also a good way to go if you're pressed for time. you can do the material on your own and then just show up for the range day and test. I'd contact TTousi or Cobb for that.

best of luck.

Range day is not necessarily a rigid structure. So if your permit instructor was also a DNR instructor and they felt that their permit range work qualified as a range day then maybe they would sign off on it (I'd make you come shooting with me again or attend an actual range day but thats just me).

But why would you want to cheat yourself out of a day at the range anyway?

More info about the independent study and web learning programs can be found here: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firea ... index.html

You obviously have plenty of time before deer season so you should be able to get it done by then but if you do not, then there is also the apprentice hunter program which is new this year if you don't have your FAS certificate. It's only good for one year and you have to be accompanied by (close enough to communicate visually and verbally without aid) another licensed hunter who is not also on the apprentice program. Its also another $3.50 over the cost of your normal license.
