I will again be taking my .35 Whelen and 45-70 as backup to deer camp just south of Bemidji this year. We just got back from re cutting trails and moving stands along the swampy area of our property and all looks good with rubs and scrapes this year. In my primary and repositioned stand I will be toting a .454 with a 2X scope, heavy brush along the wet area and all visable shots are less than 50 yards.

Good luck to all, and more important, have a safe and enjoyable deer hunting season.

There was a day when I lived for deer season. Now the 30.30 is retired. Good luck to all.

At least a couple of Savage 99' in 300 savage, the boy uses a Ruger 77 RSI in 250 savage, the Daughter will either use a No 1 in 257 bob or a 77 in 6.5 sweded. There will be a couple of other back ups along for the season incase someone new shows up or its a completely crappy day.

Heavy snow its a .44 mag trapper with a lyman peep sight on it, nothing to freeze or get wet. And slow stalking or still hunting in heavy snow is a lot of fun. I have walked to within 20 or so yards of my biggest bucks in heavy snow.

While I'm not as passionate over deer hunting as I was in my younger days, I still like to go. We have all of our stands refreshed on our hunting land and we're ready to go although it's been turning to swamp with all the recent rains.

I hunt with a Super Redhawk .44 mag with a red dot scope these days. I recently started using the Super instead of my old Redhawk with open sights as my eyes aren't as sharp as they were a few years ago. Most shots in our thick woods are under 30 yards so a handgun works as well as a rifle.

We cut more trails every year and the deer love to use them.

For us, its the social aspect we like the best, getting together with nephews and brother, and his brother in law, and others as well, that makes it a fun few days.

Same for me, Super Redhawk .44 mag with red dot scope. Switched from rifles 3 years ago and won't ever look back.
