I actually already thought this was a Federal law but maybe I'm mistaken. Currently referred to Judiciary.

I think somebody needs to have a word with Tony. Any bill is at least as bad as it looks.

It would be cool if this were stickied and kept up to date with hearing time/location stuff. Kind of a one stop legislative scoreboard.

What sort of letter ought I write to Scott Dibble? I am a constituent.

H.F. 1407 was introduced today by Hackbarth and assigned to Public Safety Policy and Oversight
It seems to be mostly a duplicate of HF415
But changes
Quote: and shall not be abriged. to Quote: and shall not be infringed.
Hackbarth is not a co-author on HF0415 yet either.

Hi Mosin, with respect to S. F. 1929, you are correct there is an applicable Federal statute; PL108-277 (Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, 2004). See also, 18 USC 926B & 926C. The statute is referred to as "LEOSA".
These laws authorize active and retired Federal and local LEOs to carry firearms in off-duty situations. They also set stringent qualifications for that authority, but if qualified, the LEOs are permitted to carry under Federal authority; which in most instances preempts state or local restrictions.
Hope this helps clarify the situation. As noted, any efforts by MN to restrict LEOSA are probably a waste of time and effort due to Federal preemption.

1929 appears to be a restatement of LEOSA, as well as a requirement that departments issue the retired-officer credentials.
Some departments are refusing to issue these credentials; this statute would permit retired officers to seek a writ of mandamus to force their old departments to issue the credentials.
Sounds good to me.

Hackbarth is not a co-author on HF0415 yet either. I'd still prefer the language from the Pennsylvania dissent: Quote: ... the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and their own state, or the United States, or for the purpose of killing game; and no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed, or real danger of public injury from individuals;
