More about the bill, debate and vote

The gun show loophole bill would require a background check before the
sale of any gun sale at a gun show. Current law requires such checks
only if the seller is a Federally licensed dealer. To become law, this
measure will need to pass in the House and Senate.

Before the meeting, the NRA sent out emails claiming that only 1 percent
of crime guns come from gun shows, a figure based on interviews with
convicts. But during the committee discussion, Rep. Paymar made it clear
that the ATF has identified gun shows as a major trafficking channel.
Convicts who are not themselves gun traffickers have little
understanding of the gun trafficking pipeline. From 2004 to 2006, the
ATF made one arrest for every 1.6 gun shows investigated. (An excellent
new report on no-check gun sales can be found at
http://www.bradycenter.org/xshare/pdf/r ... report.pdf)

Quotes of the day:

Rep. Al Juhnke, to Rep. Bobby Champion of North Minneapolis: "If I lived
in your district, I'd vote for everything (gun regulation)."

Rep. Tom Hackbarth to one of our supporters by email:
"I do not support infringing upon a person's second amendment right; or
any of their constitutional rights!"

The votes

Voting against were Reps. Laura Brod, Mark Buesgens, Pat Garofalo, Tom
Hackbarth, Bill Hilty, Al Juhnke, Paul Kohls, Tom Rukavina, Ron
Shimanski, Steve Smith, Loren Solberg.

Abstention: Rep. Steve Simon.

Absent: Reps. Tom Emmer, Larry Howes, Tom Huntley, Mary Kiffmeyer, Mary Murphy, Gene Pelowski, Joyce Peppin, Ryan Winkler, Jean Wagenius.

Well, duh....then she wouldn't be able to get their hopes up. Besides, isn't it in the CSM bylaws that they're only allowed to tell half of the story....

Do you think she has any idea how many guns shared the same room with her?

I think it would be shocking for her if all of the progunners in the audience wouldget up and remove their cover garments as the procedings cm to an end. Probably have to tip off security ahead of time. But maybe worth the effort.

Why Is the RKBA Less of a Right?: Congress will consider legislation next month that would require people wanting to speak in public to first undergo a background check and pay a permit fee. Not really! But how would you react if it was true? What if your other constitutional rights were treated the same was as your right to bear arms? Whether you own a gun or not, the Second Amendment should matter to you – because if one constitutional right can be taken away by majority rule, they all can be. Imagine if you had to get a government license before you were allowed to freely worship, or to be safe in your own home from warrantless searches and seizures. Or what if you had to get government permission to own a printing press? Actually, if you carry a cell phone, you carry a printing press in your pocket or purse – you can publish to an email list from your phone as large as the circulation of any colonial newspaper, and more quickly. If a cell phone is a printing press, are you carrying yours concealed? Do you have a concealed carry permit? …

Nah. She knows, and I've used the fact that she knows for political advantage in the past -- I'm not sure than giving her or one of her supporters an opportunity to go all shreiky does anything good.

Nothing like the old, "if they're so scary, how come you're in a room full of them" to make her look at least a bit disingenuous...

This reminds me of that email a few years back send out by one of their volunteers to other law students. Shreiky is a good word for it.

Here it is: http://joelrosenberg.livejournal.com/46175.html

Wow, that was five years ago.

Since I do want to be bit decorous and not make improper comments, let me just say that while I maintain my disagreements with Heather and disdain for her methods, it was pretty clear to me at the hearing the other day that she has been putting in her time at the gym, probably on the Stairmaster.

A gentleman would not comment in more detail, even though the comment would perhaps be flattering, and I do try to be such.

I think it's arguable that she has about three. If you include the Pink Ladies who van down from Duluth, it's a dozen or so.

Pages 4 and 5.

I would be happy to provide the originals and a release for anyone who wanted to make a poster. Walgreens does 20"x30" posters for $20.
