The city where apostrophes arent welcomeBy Andy Dolan

Add to My Stories Its a little difficult to place sometimes, but if itd never been invented our sentences wouldnt be so easy to read and wed all get confused because we wouldnt know who owned anything.
But the apostrophe is obviously just too challenging for some.
Birmingham City Council has dropped possessive apostrophes from its road and street signs altogether - so St Paul's Square becomes St Pauls, for example.
Dumbing down: There's no apostrophe in the sign for St Paul's Square, near the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham city centre

The decision follows years of debate about whether apostrophes should be restored to local place names such as Kings Norton, Acocks Green and Druids Heath.
The authority says the decision was taken to achieve a consistent standard across the city.
But campaigners have accused it of 'dumbing down'.

John Richards, founder of the Apostrophe Protection Society, said the decision was 'absolute defeatism'.

Mr Richards, a retired journalist, said: 'This is setting a terrible example. All over Birmingham, and in other cities, teachers are trying to teach children correct grammar and punctuation. Now children will go around Birmingham and see utter chaos.

'If you don't have apostrophes, is there any point in full stops, or semi-colons, or question marks? Is there any point in punctuation at all?'

As it was: The sign with an apostrophe
Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education, added: 'It sets children a terrible example, especially when schools are doing their best to help improve grammatical standards.'
Moseley and Kings Heath Liberal Democrat councillor Martin Mullaney, who devised the policy, believes Birmingham should follow the example of the U.S., which dropped the possessive apostrophe in place names in 1890 and Australia, which followed suit in 2001.

Councillor Mullaney, who chairs the transportation scrutiny committee, said: 'I know I am opening up a right can of worms here.
'But we have to make a decision. Either we reintroduce the apostrophe across the whole city, or we don't.'

He pointed to the prohibitive cost of changing all signs to reintroduce the apostrophe and added that dropping the apostrophe would help emergency services who rely on computerised databases and satellite navigation to find addresses quicker.
The ruling followed a review of the use, or non-use, of the apostrophe in the suburb of Kings Heath, south Birmingham.
When a public toilet sign was erected in Kings Heath recently - without the punctuation mark in Kings - it was swiftly painted in after complaints by language campaigners.

I'm quite certain that, whether or not you feel the apostrophes should be used, some software updates could be made to address navigation issues more effectively than attacking this problem from the hardware side of things.

Just don't ask me to pre-apply the calamine lotion. Image

Or for that matter, post-apply.

Maybe he meant those furthest to the left, or the most left-leaning. They would be the left-est, I think.
