MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- There was a close call when a Madison police officer pointed his gun at a 12-year-old reaching at his pants.

Madison police say officers were sent to Penn Park for two males with guns on Memorial Day.

When officers found them, police say a 12-year-old boy reached toward his waistband, where an officer could see a bulge. The officer pointed his gun, ordering him to show his hands.

The boy later said he didn't know what to do so he started reaching for a semiautomatic BB gun tucked in his pant leg. Police told him reaching for any type of gun around officers could be lethal.

A 14-year-old relative who had a BB gun was cited for unlawful use of a facsimile firearm and resisting an officer. The 12-year-old was cited for unlawful use of a facsimile firearm.

The appropriate headline for this should be:

Two juveniles arrrested: alleged to possess handguns in park

That has to be the nightmare of anyone with a badge. A bullet fired by a kid is just as lethal as one fired by an adult, and this is a no-win for the cop. If he doesn't respond with force (drawing/issuing orders), he risks getting shot if it's not just kids playing around. If he does respond with force, he gets called out for drawing on a kid.

If they were my kids, they'd have seriously tanned backsides. Oh wait, that's abuse these days, isn't it.

This ought to be in "on the job". Those kids are lucky that their lead levels aren't higher right now. From the call and known info, the cops would have been justified to shoot with the move the kid pulled.

It's a win for nobody, where the hell were the parents to tell the kids "NO." when they needed it?

I would think that officer have had a few "Holy Sh*t" scotches later that night - but taking it a step further, incidents like this only put the officer closer to harms way; will he hesitate out of over caution the next time he is in a similar situation?

My concern. (The hesitation, not the scotches)

Sounds like two wannabe gang bangers. It's too bad their names were not available so we could look up their accomplishments at a later date.

Given their current intelligence, you think they'll live that long?

Well if they've learned something from this incident they might. Hopefully it goes beyond BB Gun vs Glock, Glock wins. :)
