Your not going to be blasted by me, I took my renewal class from Phorvick simply because it was the most reasonably priced and complete course available.

I think course content and price both have to be considered when deciding on where to take your permit class. I also think you should find an read all the posts on this forum that relate to classes. There is a lot of bashing of some instructors and some of it may be factual. If nothing else it provides amusing reading. After you have done your homework, take a class, get your permit and decide at that point whether or not to take another class from that instructor. There are a lot of choices, and the choice is noones but yours. Good luck, and "may the Force be With You" so to speak

thanks mr. Deanc. i figure if some of you local guys say Don is one of the good instructors that's good enough for me. i'll contact Don about his next class in eden prairie.

While I agree that no training should be required, there is a lot to know, and dozens of pitfalls that a good class can help you avoid.

More importantly, you run the risk of picking up incorrect information, which can get you in a lot of trouble.

For those very reasons as a newby to carry I think there actually should be requirements. I for one do not want some crazy son of a gun running around
with a gun just because he should be able to.

The biggest thing taught should be the responsibility that comes with carrying. Before the class many would not think about consequences or backdrop to the situation etc.

BTW I really liked the way Jason and Mike of Metro Defense (princewally) ran their class with a lot of discussions and what if's not to mention the price is REALLY right for Veterans.

hi Joel. i presume you are the owner of this neat forum. funny you mention Penaz. i was in a gun shop yesterday and the guy behind the counter told me about him. apparently Penaz just gave a free carry class for 90 college guys and gals. i think that is great for our cause as far as gun rights and self protection. i would have contacted him if not for the fact that i already emailed Don Larson. Joel, from everything i hear you do a good class, but currently i'm counting pennies left over from my move from Wisconsin. hopefully i will be able to buy some ammo for my class with what i save on a less expensive class. i'm having a hard time finding ammo especially 380. anyone have any leads on where to find some? thanks jw

And they are the guys I took my renewal from.

It's hard to give them an shining endorsement because I am so self-conscious of the great personal relationship I have with them that I'm afraid of being self-serving.

I definitely give them a thumbs-up too.

I suppose I should say I really like Don too and look forward to our monthly lunches and one day taking some advanced classes from him....one day...

I've been carrying for several years now. The problem I'm going to have (good problem) will be deciding who I will take my renewal class from when the time comes. By reputation there are some darn fine instructors on this board, and darn nice folks to boot. In the long run I would like to take some type of course with serveral of the instructors here.

Jonahwaters, I think you are taking a good first step in the decision process by asking here. Check out some of the names mentioned I'm sure you'll find something that will fit your needs.

I agree wholeheartedly with the different instructor idea. I took my initial from Andrew Rothman, and would recommend him to anybody without any reservations whatsoever. He did a top-notch job, is VERY thorough, and runs an entertaining class on top of it all.

I plan to take my renewal down the road from Joel. I'm certain it will be worth every nickel.

BTW, Jonah, I took my NRA Basic Pistol and PPITH Instructor training from Don, and will have PPOTH Instructor training with him in a couple of weeks. I'm guessing you're in for a very good class. Don's an excellent instructor, and is an all-around great guy.

hey guys, just checking in to thank everyone again for all the great help. i would also like to thank our host, Joel, for creating this unique forum. i feel it's very generous of Joel to allow other instructors to solicit on his message board. koodos to you, Joel.

btw, i've contacted DonL regarding a carry class. due to unforseen problems i won't be able to take the class until august. anyways, i guess i'll have plenty of time to learn the ropes before class time.

Actually, apparently not; his website says that he and "Michael Martin from MnTactics" are planning to give a significantly discounted class -- "$5 for paperwork" -- for up to 100 such on the 27th. In principal, it sounds like a generally legitimate promotion, although if one clicks on his signup link, there's no place to register for the $5 class at http://joepenaz.ipower.com/store/page2.html; I can't tell how they'd sign up for the $5 class, or if it's really $5 plus $3.50 for "shipping."

Still, if it does exist, even a $8.50 class is pretty cheap.
