I too have a small collection of tools and whatnot. and I'd love to get together and compare notes with people. Besides, I still have to shakedown Andrew for some leather.

The biggest thing that has been holding me back from my next holster project has been practicing my tooling, and money; apparently all of the toys I want require payment. (that and the wife's purse I keep promising to finish for her)

As a side note, the guys at Tandy do free (I think) leatherworking workshops on a regular basis. I keep meaning to go to one of them, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

God invented Kydex for a reason.

:P

Actually, I do like my Galco Royal Guard IWB holster, but usually the C-TAC or Mika get the call.

I also like Kydex - but "CLEARING LEATHER" sounds soooo much cooler than

"Clearing Kydex..."

The basic leatherworking class at Tandy is free, and an excellent intro class; the others are quite reasonably priced. The guy to talk to for details is the manager, Johan Potgieter. Here's his info:

I've often thought a holster would be a fun project. Hmm...

I'm supposed to be getting my tanned deer hides back from Uberglove someday  and would love to see about making my own. Be glad to share some material too.

I dont think that deer hide is going to be stiff enough or thick enough for holsters.

I plan on using Bull Hide.

I saw an ad for a combination Kydex and leather IWB holster from a compamy called Crossbreed. As I was looking for a replacement holster for my P7 I gave them a call. Turn around is about 5/6 weeks and I should have my holster by this weekend. I'll give you a report once I've tested the holster.

Most interesting.

The guy is apparently somewhat new at this: I see a few parts I'd disagree with, from what I have read.

* Don't use hot water to soak the leather. It removes the natural oils from the leather. Cool or lukewarm water will do the trick -- it just takes a few more minutes.

* There are fiishes other than the lacquer he describes. My Tandy guy recommended a simple wax.

* DON'T mold the leather around the back of the trigger! The holster is supposed to cover the trigger, not pull it!

OK, so what we should do with the trigger area is put something in that area to cover it before molding the holster? I was thinking silly putty and then a layer of something to give the trigger area a smoothe finish.

edited so I wouldn't look like a second grade drop-out. I REALLY need to learn to type :-)

Nah. If you don't push it in, it'll stretch tight across the trigger guard, which is perfect.
