What's the purpose of molding the holster so that it recesses into the ejection port of the gun?

Chris Cunningham of Cunningham Custom Holsters calls it a "dangerous trend", warning that continued wear may cause leather to come loose from the inside of the holster and jam the gun during use. While the text concedes that this problem is unlikely, this is enough of a concern that Cunningham holsters for autos are designed without the molding around the ejection port.

Thoughts?

If it's an open top holster (No retention device except a snug fit) it probably helps hold the gun in place just like the molding around the trigger guard. I've got several holsters that are molded around the ejection port. I just took a close look and I don't see any unusual wear. The molding is quite rounded inside and the port just slips by easily. It would take a pretty good chunk to tie up a gun. It would have to get wedged between the slide and the barrel somehow, that's not too likely to happen in my opinion.

It's a trend alright, every other holstermaker has been doing it for the last fourty plus years, though in my thirtythree years of shooting, I've never seen a gun hang up because of the molded holster.

Sounds to me like Chris Cunningham just doesn't want to go that extra step.
I can't imagine anyone holstering and un-holstering enough to cause this problem.

I've never heard of that happening. Normally if any leather is going to come loose from the inside of the holster, it's the result of a poor quality leather or a poorly fitted holster. The vast majority of gun owners pay close attention to their gear and the condition it is in. You would most likely notice the leather "dust" long before a piece big enough to cause a jam came off.

Or, more likely he is using the classic sales technique of fabricating a problem, then providing a solution to the problem.

I always mold into the ejection port for OWB holsters. IWB or Pocket holsters don't need to IMHO.

I think he meant that he molds into the ejection port for holsters to be worn on the belt (Outside the Waist Band) for retention reasons. Inside The Waist Band rely on the belt and tension for a lot of their retention and pocket holsters you don't want as tight so he doesn't mold into the ejection port.

Made perfect sense to me, LOL. But I'm quite used to sentence structure being heavy on acronyms, and it makes perfect sense for the reasons plblark noted.
