The holster arrived Saturday and I'm VERY pleased! I bought the Double Clip. That thing is solid and the M&P fits very snuggly. After finding my heaviest belt I took it out for my first carry experience. I still need to find the perfect spot for me to balance comfort and concealment, but where I had it, about 4 o'clock, was very comfortable, even for driving. I could easily get used to it. I found I did need to move my wallet to my left rear pocket though. I think that will take more getting used to than the holster.

I thought the concealment was fine when wearing a button up shirt over my tshirt. I think, however, that the size of the pistol will force me to get something smaller for carrying, come springtime. Oh darn.....

The timing was perfect too. I received my permit two days earlier. Upon receiving the holster, I immediately went out for my first carry experience...a trip to Menards, the grocery store, and a tea shop. By the time I made my third stop I felt very comfortable with it.

Later I decided I better tell my wife about my permit. I had told her a long time ago I wanted to get it and she got pretty upset. She knew I went to some firearms training a month earlier but she didn't know exactly what it was. What really helped was that in the local paper, there was an article about a guy being robbed at gunpoint in his driveway in our town. I made sure I pointed that out first, then I pulled out my permit and said, "Stuff like that is why I got this". Surprisingly she didn't get upset. In fact she was rather neutral about it, saying "Oh wow...I guess I've never been around guns that much".

Not around guns? Does she realize how many I have? I hunt, I target shoot, including CMP, and I take our kids shooting. Heck, even my 5 year old owns two rifles, a .22 and a Garand...though he's not shot either yet. I didn't bring all that up though...I let well enough alone.

Then I pointed to our kids, and told her there's three good reasons right there for carrying. Finally I told her someday I'd like to have her get her permit. She didn't say anything about that, though.

Then came the Omaha mall incident and we talked about how even in a "safe" environment, you're never really safe. I also told her how it was a gun free zone and it's too bad a permit holder wasn't there to stop the guy.

A very good sign was when today she forward the Lott article at foxnews.com about the place being a gun-free zone:

I think she's becoming more accepting of it that I thought she would.

I did my permit class and permit before my wife knew I had it. I carried for a whole weekend and she did not even know. She was surprised and asked the usual questions. The next time we got together with my father-in-law she announced it to them. He of course wanted to see the gun and 3 months later he took his permit class and carries every day. He is a great father-in-law.
