Lawsuit: Cops beat mom, gave gift cards as bribe

Woman claims she and her children were assaulted by officers and offered a bribe to be quiet about the incident.

George Hunter / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Cash and gift cards from Walmart and Target stores were allegedly offered as bribes to a 36-year-old woman if she agreed to keep quiet about a group of officers who broke into her home and assaulted her and her children, the woman claims in a lawsuit.

Attorneys for Tasha Flowers filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Wayne County Circuit Court, seeking $15 million in damages stemming from the alleged Jan. 3 incident.

Flowers claims in the lawsuit that several Detroit police officers from the department's Western District responded to a neighbor's complaint that she was selling drugs in her home on Shrewsbury. The police rushed into Flowers' home without her permission and without a search warrant.

"They showed up at my door and pointed a gun at me," Flowers said. "Then the officers pushed past me into my house and started asking me about drugs and guns. They pushed my daughter, and threw me to the ground and twisted my arm. Then the lieutenant grabbed my 14-year-old son in a chokehold until he was unconscious."

Flowers said the group of about 10 officers began assaulting her other six children, ages 8 to 17, who she said suffered cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Then, the next day, Flowers said the lieutenant in charge of the officers paid a second visit to her home.

"He said he felt bad about what he'd done, and asked if there was anything he could do to make up for it," Flowers said. "Then he offered me two gift cards: One from Walmart and Target; and $100."

Flowers said she turned over the money and gift cards to Detroit Police Internal Affairs investigators.

Cmdr. Brian Stair of the Internal Affairs Section acknowledged that investigators are looking into the allegations.

Interesting.
He offers an apology and a gift. I'd say that might be the right thing to do.

Yup. Here's how to do it. "Ma'am: I'm very sorry. I want you to have this gift card as a token of my apology -- and while I can't talk about this anymore, I want you to understand that that's all it is; it's a request that you forgive me, not not talk about it."

It's worth noting that of the <s>heavily-armed masked men in executioners hoods who shot the shit out of that nice Hmong family's home</s> dedicated public servants in their issue gear including tactical balaclavas who lawfully discharged their service weapons, shooting the shit out that nice Hmong family's home in north Minneapolis, not one apologized.

Seems like it would have been better to start by sending in Joe Friday to knock on the door to ask a few questions and maybe invite himself in to take a free look around at what is in plain sight first.

If that doesn't pan out, he goes back to the tipster and says he didn't see anything worth asking a judge for a search warrant, and "what else ya got, or are you just trying to settle a feud?"

Well, yeah, but that only make sense if there's some good reason to go to all that trouble, like, say some persuasive writing that saying something to the effect that the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

When they send the Tac team in and break $h!t up and take items that aren't on the warrant and injure gentle family pets . . . . or bring the same on Hmong familys unlucky enough to be home, during the same week . .. it makes you wonder if these champions of justice aren't so anxious to get their break on (kinda like getting a freak on), that they are cutting the investigators out of the loop. "ah, we don't have time for any of that desk jockey asking questions stuff, lets put some scratches in the Halligan so I can take it home and send in a request for a new one".

If it was the same ammount out of the pockets of each officer involved, it might be a decent gesture. . . way too little, but a decent gesture. Given that tax payers probably paid for the cards either indirrectly or dirrectly, the offer is insulting, degrading, and wrong.

It's probably going to cost the city of Detroit a pretty penny when all gets settled in civil court. Maybe they can use the money from the DOOR-KICKER budget. Nah, they'll probably just take a couple bucks our of their STIMULUS allottment.

Well, Obama did promise to make good on the 100,000 cops initiative or whatever that thing was. . . . my guess is that stimulus money is exactly what will cover these issues.

Are you serious? They didn't bump her cart in the grocery store, or take the last serving on the table without asking if anyone else would like some. Maybe, if that was the case, then you'd be spot on.

What they did, rather, was barge into a private citizen's home, cause terror amongst the family, and physically assaulted them (including choking almost to death the 14 year old son, whom we can only presume attempted to protect his family in some way). About the only thing missing from this picture, was that they didn't take the TV, jewlery, or any of the young women's virtue before they left. Think about it, if thugs with badges doing this in your home is not cause to shoot to defend yourself... Nevermind. I won't finish that sentence.

I'd say, the right thing to do, is that they need to go from an attitude of this:

To an attitude of this:

(Just my $0.02, I suppose...)

Opps, I missed the part about without a warrant.

In that case I will say that an apology is a good first step.
