Police: Officer shot while taking gun apart
story link

Staff Report
Port Orange police said Friday that Officer Gerald Zito accidentally shot himself earlier this week while dismantling a fellow officer's gun.

Zito was alone in the Police Department's training room late Wednesday afternoon examining a .22-caliber handgun he was thinking about buying for personal use, Assistant Chief Wayne Miller said.

While he was in the process of dismantling the firearm, the gun accidentally discharged, and Zito was shot in the lower abdomen, Miller said.

The 58-year-old Zito underwent emergency surgery to his colon, and Friday he was listed in stable condition at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Miller said he expected Zito to remain hospitalized at least through Monday, and he didn't know when Zito would be able to return to work.

An internal investigation into the incident with the 14-year veteran officer continues, Miller said.

I had an 1860 Colt Navy that chased me across the room once. I had to jump on a table to get away from it.

You never know when a handgun will just go nuts on you and start firing away.

(Yes, there are people that believe this stuff.)

Once in awhile, one of my Glocks will start trying to jump out of it's holster and start firing, and I'll need to hold it down. Both my G17 and G26 have tried this before, and it usually happens when I'm in a crowded place like a shopping mall, movie theater, or (gasp) a government building.

I think the problem is that the essence of the Glock handgun is truly evil...you just never know when they'll turn on you and shoot you through the weak hand or your strong side hip, or start blowing away innocent people.

I wonder if the wounded cop will get a paid vacation?

Wonder no more. If he was on cop shop property, and if he was on-duty, of course he will get paid.

I would further speculate that he will be feted at some up-coming police awards banquet and receive the department's equivalent of the Purple Heart.

Natural Selection strikes again.

I'll not lose any sleep over the special people shooting themselves. Haven't you heard? There's an LEO exemption written into the four safety rules. This fine fellow was just enjoying his privilege.

Comming next: ND's in your airplane cabin!

(Sorry for my unusually-thick cynicism. I'm in a mood tonight.)
