The comments were funny, the situation . . . .

I would have left and let them try and tackle me. Turn the tables on them and have them arrested for assault and battery.

Yeah, I would have left immediately after I found myself the center of attention, rather than hang out and wait for the situation to develop.

"May I leave? (If no) Am I being detained? What law did I violate?"

I don't know that I'd give them even that much. If you aren't a cop, you aren't detaining me without getting one involved.

This is also being discussed at slashdot.
I think the incident shows how little the general public knows about dealing with police and private security.
The guards who refill ATMs are by and large a bunch of paranoid fuckers. I had one grab the butt of his Glock the other day when I got on the same escalator with him on the way to work. I'm not that scary and wasn't armed.

Agreed, but that way any bystanders hear me say that, showing that I was asking for clarification of what I'd done wrong, along with trying to leave peacefully...

I totally agree that the Loomis goons and cops did a bad thing and should be slapped down for it. I hope he sues their asses off!
That said, this guy is a left wing moonbat, judging by his T-shirts...

Oh, sure, he's a nutcase. Nutcases are still allowed to have cameras, and use them, though.
