NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (AP) ― A police officer from western Wisconsin has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography while on duty.
Anthony Miller of New Richmond entered the plea in St. Croix County Circuit Court Thursday.
The state Department of Justice says agents served a search warrant at Miller's New Richmond house in December of 2008.
DOJ says Miller worked as an officer in Hastings, Minn. and admitted he downloaded and traded pornographic pictures of children while on the job. Agents say Miller traded images of child pornography through a file sharing program and searched the Internet for child pornography.
Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Sadly there are people that would believe that excuse.

See, here's the problem in a nutshell.
APPROPRIATE punishment would have been consecutive sentences, no parole, and placement in general population with "I was a cop and got off on kiddies" tattooed as a tramp stamp.

That is actually a thoughtful idea - to ghettoize the offender. But, experience seems to indicate that these depraved individuals just increase in their appetites and their level of depravity as time passes.
For example, my sister-in-law's ex-husband. He was convicted in 2004 of possession of child porn. He violated his probation numerous times with the last time this spring being he actually crossed state lines and took a 13 year old back to his place to have sex with her multiple times.
(Don't get me started on my sister-in-law's choice in men, it's a long, sad tale)

I worked with sex offenders for a number of years (community corrections, was on security team for a private facility that was authorized to handle them through the predator level, along with other parolees). Disturbing work, but I learned a heck of a lot about the criminal mind.
A couple of things folks should know:
1) These people are mentally sick, and I mean that literally. They are wired in such a way that they get the same feeling when looking at a 5-year old that I get when looking at Angelina Jolie.
2) They do not stop at child pornography. If someone is looking at that type of material, it only means that they have been too afraid to act on the urges, or haven't had the opportunity to do so.

It's almost never never this black and white.
There is a broad spectrum of conduct that fits into every defined crime, even one as apparently simple as "possession of kiddy porn." The offenders, naturally also run across a broad spectrum. Some you wonder how they got caught up in this mess; others you want locked away forever; and most are in the middle. Judges have to maintain a certain sense of proportionality based on all the facts and circumstances surrounding the crime. They can't just give everyone the max.
Think about it, that would actually "reward" the worst offenders.

If you look at alcoholics, almost all of them started by drinking milk.

Kimberman's point notwithstanding (but well-taken), from my experience it's a really slippery slope for the true offenders.
Drinking milk is something that both normal and abnormal people do. A normal person does not look at pictures of a 5 year old's vagina or penis.
That said, experts are very divided on the topic. Mayo's studies happen to claim a strong connection, FWIW.

I'd rather he (they) stop creating a market for kiddie porn. Every child he viewed in pics and vids was someone's real-life victim. This fuck helped create the market.
