Flagrant abuse of power after his son rear-ends this woman's car. He later lies about the entire incident, blaming the woman who was rear-ended by her son. Later, officers asked the store to erase their surveillance tapes. Little wrong-doing has been admitted to and therefore the courts will do what the police department would not; secure an apology.

Lesson learned: Don't get rear-ended by a cop's kid.
Thoughts: If I waved my pistol in a threatening manner I know where I'd end up.

DA's office is a bunch of cowards, apparently.

I'll withhold judgement until after the PD finishes their disciplinary proceedings. I do give kudos to their internal affairs department for handling it the right way, based on the information in the article.

Here's an interesting tidbit from the story...

Quote:
Ironically, Lopez Jr. had a .22-caliber Magnum revolver in his waistband during the accident and throughout the confrontation in the Lukoil, according to his statement to Internal Affairs. He had a permit to carry the weapon, he said in the statement.

The driver of the Mazda, Stephen Soda, also had a handgun in his glove compartment along with his carry permit, according to police. Police reviewed the permit and released Soda without charges. Neither weapon was drawn in the incident.

Good. The fact that they BOTH had carry permits didn't seem to come into play. Neither played "I'll show you mine, if I show you show me yours" and neither gun was fired. The fact both had guns with them should have ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING ON THE CASE. Unless the one with the .22 in his waistband DID show his - but the article'd tell us that, if he had.

Desk work and weapon taken away. Good start. Ms. Lawless will probably end up with a nice settlement.
