Separation Meetings Continue for Strike Force

MINNEAPOLIS - The board that oversees the Metro Gang Strike Force met Wednesday for what many thought would be the last time. Still, nothing has gone as planned with the unit.

For the board that oversees the Metro Gang Strike Force, this is an amicable separation. Their attorney told them they had to stay together to resolve three lawsuits to split up more than $600,000 in forfeiture cash.

Public Safety Commissioner Michael Campion shut down the strike force after Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek quit. He quit after FOX 9 revealed the board chair intervened in a case involving his daughter and her boyfriend.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher wants Commissioner Campion to release $1.5 million in strike force funds so individual departments can still fight gangs.

For now, the board will stay together, to clean up the mess left behind. The only thing they could agree on was to end the meeting.

A spokesperson for Commissioner Campion says it's unlikely they'll release any money because of strings that it must go to a multi-jurisdictional task force and not individual departments. A new strike force, which will likely need legislative approval, will focus on intelligence gathering, and provide manpower support as needed to individual departments.

You couldn't make this stuff up if you wanted to. It's all about the money. Lots and lots of, what appears to be, ill-gotten money.
