While I'm not a big fan of them stepping on my civil rights. I do think this change in many cases is due to the scum they are dealing with and the associated increase in the level of risk when the cops have to deal with them.

In the 50's you did not see alot of urban youth carrying semi automatic weapons.

In the 50's you didn't see alot of ANYBODY carrying semiautos outside the military. Revolvers ruled the roost.

I don't have a problem with police forces having military style equipment such as armor, weapons, and high-tech crowd control devices. There are many scenarios in this ever-more-crowded nation where bad things could happen that require those tools - like riots. I'm not in favor of the 'police state' activities though. Unreasonable searches, checkpoints, violations of civil rights, etc. Those things are disturbing.

As long as the police are enforcing legitimate laws in a legal manner give them the tools to do it.

Having tools is not a problem in itself. The frequency with which these tools are being used in situations where they are not appropriate is.

Definitely. That's right in line with what I was saying.

And exactly how many such situations are faced by small town and small suburbs? Yet, many of them have SWAT teams and riot gear. Waste of money, and potentially deleterious to our civil rights

The problem with exciting tools is that their owners feel the need to use them.

Ah, but think of what fun it would be! The screams, the smelly pants, the paperwork...

Well, then clearly that AR wasn't necessary. You're obviously wasting taxpayer dollars.

I'll take it off his hands, then! I'll take it as my "tax refund/stimulus package" rather than his dept keeps wasting gas money hauling it around. :-D

If you want to be informed/scared:
1. Watch your local PD's "SWAT" team practice (every town and village has one. Laural and Hardy in Blue.
2. Read this http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6476.
