Quote: Mar 20, 2008 6:57 pm US/Central Deli Owner, Officers Get In Argument Over Parking (WCCO)The argument between two Minneapolis police officers and a well-known business owner was supposedly quite a shouting match, and it was all captured on videotape. So how did a debate over parking spots become heated? Easter is the busiest season at Kramarczuk's Deli. The store is packed inside and outside. The store has an employee devoted to supervising the parking lot. Orest Kramarczuk showed WCCO-TV his security video that he said captured the confrontation he had with Minneapolis police after he asked them not to park two squads in his store lot. "See he came up to my face," said Kramarczuk. Kramarczuk said at one point one officer butted his chest up against him. "And he said, 'If you touch me, you're going down.' And I said 'going down for what?'" said Kramarczuk. Kramarczuk said the police told him the spots appeared to be fair game because all of the spots have "Kramarczuk's only" signs except for the two spots where the signs are missing. However, there are so many other signs the owner says. There's no audio on the tape, but he said that the person in the white shirt is a witness and that the cops were verbally abusive. "A little man and a bed-wetter, and he called me a terrible business man because there were five spots open at that time," Kramarczuk said were just a few of the names they called him. "They belittled me and I felt horrible." Kramarczuk said his workers urged him to speak out. "As a business man, who's got this ... prominent business, and an absolutely clear record -- if I'm treated this way, how is the average citizen being treated?" Kramarczuk has filed a formal complaint. Minneapolis Police say for that reason, they can't talk about the case. Police have sent out a message telling officers not to park in his lot.

I hope Kramarczuk pursues tresspass charges. The crap from the JBTs in Minneapolis has got to stop. I don't know what it will take, tresspass charges on all the JBTs, complaints, and a sweeping of the house in the MPD?

He can't pursue trespassing charges, not effectively; the City Attorney would be the one to do that, and, let's face it, the Minneapolis City Attorney isn't going to file charges against two fine, upstanding MPD officers.

But what about these two?

They just made a mistake; the business owner is lying; so is the witness; the dog ate their lunch; nice business he has here, shame if something were to happen to it; he's only saying it because he's a cop basher, and he's going to have some zoning problems; he'd better not have a robbery there -- who's he going to call? WCCO? etc.

What's funny to me is I so often see Mpls cops parking just about anywhere they want that the thought of them parking in a lot in a legitimate space is kind of strange.

Ya well, if they're on business I don't care where they park as long as they're not unnecessarily impeding those not involved in the stop. It's when they're double parked while stopping in for coffee or when they leave half their car hanging in the fast lane when they've got someone pulled over in a u-turn median crossing on the highway that I've got a problem with it.

The cops are 'Exempt' - it says so on their license plate.

Without question a matter of arrogance and distain on the part of these officers. A forceful reprimand from their supervisors is in order, and a public apology to the deli people.
Mr. Kramarczuk needs to pursue this with MPD IAD aggressively. Also demand that his City Council reprehensive sees that the matter gets the attention it deserves. This is a private property issue, trespassing is a criminal offence, and under cover of authority contemptible.

I think I'll have to go there next week (they're closed Easter) and buy a bunch of brats. Dianne and I got an assortment of their sausages and they are really, really good.
When I'm there I'll make sure to mention that I saw the story on the news and that I am supporting him the best way I know how.
