Quote: NEW YORK - Three detectives were acquitted of all charges Friday in the 50-shot killing of an unarmed groom-to-be on his wedding day, a case that put the NYPD at the center of another dispute involving allegations of excessive firepower. Quote: The officers, complaining that pretrial publicity had unfairly painted them as cold-blooded killers, opted to have the judge decide the case rather than a jury. http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/04/25/sea ... index.htmlQuote: Witnesses said that about 4 a.m., closing time, as Bell and his friends left the club, an argument broke out. Believing that one of Bell's friends, Joseph Guzman, was going to get a gun from Bell's car, one of the undercover detectives followed the men and called for backup.
What happened next was at the heart of the trial, prosecuted by the assistant district attorney in Queens.
Bell, Guzman and Trent Benefield got into the car, with Bell at the wheel. The detectives drew their weapons, said Guzman and Benefield, who testified that they never heard the plain-clothes detectives identify themselves as police.
Bell was in a panic to get away from the armed men, his friends testified.
But the detectives thought Bell was trying to run down one of them, according to their lawyers, believed that their lives were in danger and started shooting.
In a frantic 911 call, police can be heard saying, "Shots fired. Undercover units involved."
A total of 50 bullets were fired by five NYPD officers. Only three were charged with crimes.

Cops are never wrong, even when they are wrong. We should not question a cop's judgement because it is always and consistently correct.
This is the message I get every time I read a case like this. The court system seems to never fail to be more lenient with a peace officer than with a regular citizen.
Replace these detectives with a permit holding, pistol carrying citizen, who also thought the victim was going to get a gun, then trying to run him over. The citizen opens fire, killing one of the guys in the car.
Open and shut case, citizen doing the shooting is tried and convicted of murder as he cannot reasonably prove it was self-defense. Guys in the car had no weapon, and made no threats of GBH or death. Maybe I'm paranoid but thats how I see it working out.
But slap the wrist of these detectives and call it a day, that seems fair too...
disgusting
