From the story:
Quote:
St. Paul Police Sgt. Ann Bebeau was off duty, jogging through downtown, when a vehicle passed by her with a pair of occupants apparently fighting inside.

Near Wabasha Avenue and 12th Street, Chief John Harrington recalled Tuesday, a juvenile male suddenly sprang from the vehicle, chased by a man carrying an aluminum baseball bat.

You have to give her credit for acting with out any weapon or back-up.

Absolutely.
After all the misconduct stories lately, it's nice to be reassured that there are LEOs who take their oaths seriously.

I commend her for acting the way she did. :D I do not commend her for being without a weapon. IMO, that is a very foolish thing.

Off duty cops who don't carry puzzle me.

Speaking from my corrections days, people who get locked up by you often tend to take a very pissy view of you when they run across you in the world.

Officers who despise weapons shocks me. A freind fits that description, I don't know if it would any good to encourage him to find another occupation.

I haven't found a method to carry while jogging that works for me. Perhaps Sgt. Bebeau has a similar issue.

Ditto that. I keep telling my bro-inlaw he needs to be carrying off the clock and to borrow one of my numerous holsters or belts if he needs to.

And Fubar, the solution for jogging is a fanny pack or a shoulder rig. I use the shoulder rig with my G23 when I go for a run.

Fanny pack, holster shirt, bell band, shoulder holster, SmartCarry.

The equipment isn't lacking, just the will.

Yup. For running anything that holds the gun snugly to the body can work. That it still might not be perfect, so what ?

I'll add another option: consider ditching the sweat pants and run in lightweight cargo shorts with a belt and an IWB holster.

I'll second this. Exercise in the lighter side of your clothing, but then you'll discover what doesn't work as well - "Hey, putting spare mags loose in the cargo pocket bangs around alot. Hey, if I put it inside a Uncle Mike's Pocket holster, it doesn't smash my leg..."

Uncle Mikes in a pocket does let a .38 bang against the leg when you run; it needs to be close against your waist not to bounce. Trust me. This is when a deep cover like a Beretta .25 would be useful,. but they may not be approved for SPPD. Still, a .38 Ti in a fanny pack doesn't weight much.

I'm all for recommending cops carry off duty, but I have a hard time criticizing one who acted so heroically. Lesson learned for the future, I guess.

For cycling. The "quick draw" bag. Fits on the top bar right between your hands. Holds a S&W 342.

Shhh, don't tell REI they have something that could actually be used for anything firearm related. The granolas might get scared and stop carrying it!

Just tell them it's for a lead deficiency.

I suppose another option is to mount the gun to the handlebar and use the bag as a turret cover.

In all seriousness, that bag probably is more accessible than a shoulder holster under a partially unzipped cycling jacket. It sounds like a good hot weather/nice weather option. I'm hesitant about not having the gun on me, especially if I were knocked off the bike, for instance. Of course things would already be pretty bad at that point.

Maybe one in the bag and one in a holster would be a good solution.
