A West St. Paul police officer who saved the life of a fellow officer held hostage at gunpoint at a bank was named Minnesota Police Officer of the Year on Monday night.

Sgt. Ronald Brent Nagel, a 14-year-veteran of the department, received the honor at the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association annual convention in Alexandria.

Nagel's honor stems from a May 10, 2007, incident when he responded to an "ambush alarm" at the Retail Employees Credit Union. The gunman, Wilfred Hines, had confronted three other officers and pointed a loaded pistol at one, taking him hostage.

Nagel saw Hines lead the officer outside and force him to his knees at gunpoint. When Hines ignored demands to drop his weapon, Nagel fired three times, fatally striking Hines without harming the officer held hostage.

A Dakota County grand jury determined that the shooting was justified. Nagel was also awarded the Medal of Honor, his department's highest award.

Scott Fritz, a conservation officer with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the late officer Mark T. Bedard of the Minneapolis Park Police Department were named as honorable mentions for the award.

Fritz led a rescue effort on Pine Creek near La Crescent in Houston County in August 2007. He took his DNR airboat in response to a report of a citizen whose car had been washed off the road into 20-foot waters. Once there, he found that boats belonging to four would-be rescuers had capsized in the current. Fritz and two others managed to rescue six of the seven stranded people.

Bedard was honored posthumously. He was killed responding to a drive-by shooting last November. While chasing a suspect on foot, Bedard was struck by a Minneapolis Police Department squad car and later died.

I think while perusing Isolated Incidents we should remember that many really do "Protect and Serve" and sometimes at high personal cost.
