And I'd hit GunStop in Minnetonka before going to BigBoxville. You'll save $75 and get knowledgeable service.

I took your advice on GunStop Andrew and made sure to give them a call. They didn't have what I was looking for (no big deal cuz they can order it) but the asking price was a bit higher as BixBoxVille has these units on sale. They were very kind and knowledgable. I plan on visiting the store on any future purchases. Without even having been there yet I can almost certainly say it's a quality place.

I'll agree that the Gunstop is a good place. Frontiersman is good too. I've been to J&S quite a few times. I usually drop in whenever I go to the Fleet Farm store in Lakeville. I've only purchased one gun there and it was because there were none available anywhere else I called. It was a fair price but not a great price. It's a small shop so they don't buy in big quanities. A lot of "gunnies" hang out there. They've always been willing to bring out anything I've wanted to see and didn't seem to care if I was just looking. If you buy a gun there and it needs to go back to the manufacturer for service they will send it in for you so you don't have to deal with UPS or FedX.

I haven't read through this whole thread, so forgive me if someone else has already recomended it.

Sportsmans warehouse in Woodbury.


This place was great. Stood there for a good 45min just looking at this gun, and this one, had the guy behind the counter pulling a different gun every few min to look at a differnt one. At one point when there were no other customers, the other employees were close by to answer questions that maybe one knew that another didn't. I'll go back there anytime. Service with a smile... really...

And while I was at the Gunstop picking up my wife's Christmas present to me because she doen't have a buy permit (EAA 10mm Stock :D :D :D :D ), I'm standing there, and everybody is petting Sasha as usual (that's my big, fluffy Samoyed), and I notice this pretty big but otherwise plain cardboard box just sitting there in the aisle. Hmmm... Larry must have got big order of something in.

Then I look at the other side, and crudely written in magic marker is the following:

Barrett M-82 rifle. $7,195. (!!) :shock: :shock: Now THAT's some EFFEN inventory!!!

And that's one other area where the Gunstop does stuff nobody else does. You can bring your dog, and sit down in a chair and read a reloading manual for half an hour, and ask reloading questions nobody else can give you an answer for, and just hang out.

I've been to Sportsmans a number of times in the last 2 months. Great selection, knowledgeable and fun staff. Took a buddy there last time and we must've handled at least 20 handguns. Then they showed us handguns for our wives. When that was done they showed us what they liked and then gave us a round mag Thompson to fondle. Great way to spend some time and b/c of that I'll be spending my cash there...again, already picked up two holsters there.

I had great service at Frontiersman the other day. I went in between applying for and receiving my carry permit and Marv was very helpful - even though it was extremely obvious that I was new to the whole thing.

In fact, I plan on purchasing an S&W 642 there this evening!

My only beef with the Frontiersman is that when I bought a brand new Ruger Mark III and had the rear sight set screw crack in half when being tightened, they did nothing other than tell me to call Ruger even though I had bought the gun just two days earlier. Given how new it was I would have expected them to either (1) replace it and deal with Ruger themselves, or (2) offer to send the gun back to Ruger for me. They refused to do either, and since then I've bought exclusively from Gunstop with complete satisfaction.

This really surprises me. The Frontiersman sent a NAA revolver back to the manufacturer almost a year after I purchased it for a problem I was having.There was no questions asked.I brought it to them in the original box and they packaged it and shipped it for no charge.

I don't know about Ruger, but lot of manufacturers want to deal directly with the consumer on warranty issues. I'm not completely sure why, but manufacturers often tell dealers to have people contact them direct and that that's the only way they'll do it. They'll tell you that the dealers are not "trained" to adjuist a manufacturer's warranty, they want the "specialist", (often at a call center) to do the dirty work.

I suppose they have more leverage with the consumer, and they want to keep their sales representatives out of the matter entirely, because reps will be too generous with company money.

It's hard on dealers, because you may never buy another Ruger product anyway, but you'll buy lots of general gun stuff from a dealer, (or not buy it, and the dealer won't know why.)

The real irony is that I could not be happier with Ruger's customer service. They fixed the defect right away, shipped the gun back to me in a week rather than the three they estimated, and then promptly reimbursed my shipping costs (which were over $50 for UPS overnight shipping).

You make a good point that the reason the Frontiersman was hands-off could have been because Ruger wants it that way, and if that's right they really should have told me that rather than leave me with the impression that they just didn't care. Either way their service was lacking in this particular instance.

I'm sure I'll try them again someday. I just won't be in a hurry to do it.

I've bought alot of guns from all the guys there, they're all decent stand up guys, at least with me. The tow that really stand out form the crowd though are Herb and Tom. They always will shoot straight with me and they both give me good deals.

While I've never bought anything from Frontiersman, I've gone in there several times. The most notable one was when I was trying to get my girlfriend comfortable not only with guns in general, but with me carrying one. The staff were extremely helpful and gentle with her, explained all the mechanics of any gun she chose to look at, and never once rolled their eyes when she would squeal, bounce up and down, and say loudly "Oh, that one's cute! Look, it's pink! I like that one! I think you should carry that one!".

The one complaint I do have about Frontiersman is that you need to know how a particular gun is priced at other stores. Sometimes they have amazing deals, and other times they're more expensive than even Bill's or Gander. I've never had a problem with the sales staff themselves though.
