Post subject:  Ruger Super Blackhawk & Super Redhawk
Just looking to get educated on these two revolvers (or if you have a Hunter or Bisley, chime in also).

Mine would be (when I make the move) a .44 Magnum, likely a 7.5'' barrel. Hunting, target shooting and soft, gentle, loving attention at the cleaning table...

So what have you guys seen for the going prices at local shops? New and used would be handy.

Any notorious things to look out for with these revolvers? I've read mostly that they are a tank, and not much typically goes wrong with them. Does the blueing hold up well or is it smarter to go with a SS (excluding your taste with the looks of Blue vs. SS).

How about the DA trigger on the Redhawk? Long and heavy, or is reasonably good?

Recent prices are most important, I'm all but sold on either model, though I could always stand to learn a thing or two. In accordance with board rules, I am not trying to solicit any sale offers.

I have a super Blackhawk in 10 1/2 inch. I bought it on a whim and got it cheap, ($325 With a broken rear sight). A repalcementr site was $5.00, plus other stuff to make min. I take it to the range and keep saying i'm gonna sel it, but I DON'T. It's part of the "Collection" now. I now own a couple of .44's and wont give any up.
Simply stated, "Buy it, You'll Like It". I think Sigmund Freuid Said somthing about guns with long barrels and penis size. Guess I'll have to go home and do some reading.

I have a Redhawk 4" and Super RH 7.5". The Super has a different trigger spring arrangement and has a smoother trigger. That said, it's quite challenging to carry. The 4" can be carried but is not a lightweight. Oddly, they both seem to have the same perceived recoil, which doesn't bother me.

My 4" S&W nightguard weighs a little more than half of the Rugers. It's easy to carry and not that much more recoil. at least to me. It does tend to pull bullets out of the unfired cases however.

They are all great fun to shoot!

For just hunting and target shooting, I think I'd almost prefer a single action. With either gun, you have two things in your favor, the basic designs are tried an true and have been around for over a hundred years. Ruger has been making them for quite a while. I don't think there are many bugs left in the designs. They are both fine guns.

As an aside; I never had much experience with single action revolvers till I went to a cowboy action shoot for the first time. It's amazing how quickly some of those old timers can empty a single action revolver, almost sounded like a drum roll. I never realized that a single action revolver could be shot so rapidly.

I have a Super Blackhawk (SA), and have shot the Super Redhawk (DA) on many occasion. I have shot in both the .44 mag and .45 LC configuration. Not what I would consider a good choice for daily carry, very popular though for hunting/target. Short of a nuclear explosion these guns are indestructible. They are also very affordable.

Hunters Den in New Ulm has a new SR w/ 7 1/2" barrel in 'Satin' Stainless Steel for around $625 IIRC.

Never owned a SRH or SBH, but did have a RH w/ 7 1/2" barrel in SS and loved it! Took 1 deer with it and dispatched a couple 'coons with it when I lived out in the sticks.

Never had any problems with it. If I were gonna buy another revolver, I'd look real hard at a RH or SRH. 2 years ago, I took too long in making up my mind over buying a Bisley in .45LC and the guy sold it for $300 to a gun shop. He offered it to me for $325. :bang:

I bought a beautiful blued Blackhawk in 45 Colt with the additional 45 ACP cylinder back when James Earl Carter Jr. was actively making our collective lives miserable. I bought it at Joe's when they were located on Dale/Como/Front in Saint Paul. I paid top dollar (a Joe's standard, even back then) but with a nice LEO discount being allowed. I loved it. Reloading the 45 Colt brought me to the wonders of ball powder fouling, but I loved that firearm. I had to liquidate it a few years later due to a change in marital status.

If I had my druthers today I would purchase another. It was, as are nearly all Rugers, a fine, quality, firearm.

I'm a real fan of the old style, three screw Blackhawks without the conversion to transfer bar safeties. Ruger has been trying to recall the three screws and convert them to transfer bar since 1974. They are still nice guns after the conversion but I much prefer the triggers on the unconverted ones. I've got one in .357 and one in .30 Carbine.

Since I'm not carrying them I don't have to worry about keeping the hammer down on an empty cylinder.

I have had a 7 1/2" SBH, a 5 1/2" Redhawk, a 7 1/2" Redhawk (w/ scope) and now a 2002 4 5/8" Vaquero. All 44 magnums. Suceeding guns were bought after the previous one was sold. :bang:

Both 7.5's were for hunting and did a fine job although the Redhawk needed a trigger job. I no longer hunt much and if I do I have a couple of rifles.

I bought the shorter Redhawk and the Vaquero for camp, hiking, trail guns. Had I not been so cheap :bang: and kept the 5 1/2" Redhawk I would have had no need to purchase the Vaquero.

I prefer Rugers because they're beefy. I can put some pretty hot stuff in them than I can't in an S&W or an Anaconda. I've heard anecdotally that some early Redhawks had issues with the barrells blowing off (yes, off; not up). But I only heard that recently and not from anyone I know personally.

I chose the Vaquero over the SBH because the Vaquero was a few ounces lighter and I didn't think I needed an adjustable rear sight. For field use I prefer stainless steel.

Vaquero/SBH vs Redhawk/SRH? I think it comes down to what you like or expect. If you're used to DA choose the latter. If you need speed loader capability go with the latter. I don't so I went with the Vaquero because short barrelled SA's are cheaper than Redhawks. But everything is pricey today.

That is one drawback (and by the way, thanks for the info lumbering.buffalo, quite a write up, and list of owned experiences) to having the single action. I like SA for the classic looks, and just for what it is. A true revolver.

The DA though (redhawks or 629's) give you a swing out cylinder though, and speed loaders would be great for shooting events obviously. I doubt I'll hunt with it a whole lot, and I also doubt I'll use it for many shooting events (both not for a lack of wanting to), because I just don't get enough free days to go and do it as much as I'd like. Of course there is that evil dictating bitch called the Budget who hasn't gotten off my back in the last 5 years too.

I'm leaning toward a single action, but only barely. DA would be more practical, but SA just has something about it that draws me in.

Super Redhawk of the snubbie variety here. Certainly easier to carry than the longer barreled versions. I like that I can put .45LC rounds through it & have to say, it is genuinely nice to shoot with like a 200grn lead cowboy load. New holster arriving shortly. . . it should get a bunch more carry. Primarily it has been carried off body in the diaper bag up to this point. I like the look of unfluted cylinders, so the .454 has that going too.

I should add, Iowegan's Book of Knowledge on these guns is a mighty fine resource.
