Looking to buy a new "simple" Ruger 10/22.

Fleet Farm has the wood stock for $198.
Cabelas as has a synthetic stock for $206
I have called a few shops, but they have the more tactical models in stock for higher prices.
The gun show vendors are selling new ones for $249!

Just seeing if anyone has noticed good prices anywhere else in the cities.

Thanks!

If you can, try to get an older built model (like anything earlier than Jan. 2008 or so) because it will have a metal trigger group instead of the plastic ones on the new models. I believe Ruger has changed the hammers on the newer models too. A couple weeks back there was a used one at GunStop. I haven't been to Capras in Blaine for awhile, but a few months back they had three or four models on the shelf. Paying a little extra for the metal trigger group will pay off for you. Maybe check the next MWCA show, which I think may be this coming weekend up in Forest Lake.

ETA: Another option may be the Walmart up in Cambridge, about 25 miles north of Blaine on Hwy 65. They still sell guns, but call up there first to see if one is in stock. Those are going to all be plastic parts though.

There are several things that I don't like about the new 10/22's;

One is the plastic trigger group and barrel band
The wood that they use nowadays is really crappy.
I hate that crinkle finish paint they use on the receivers on current production 10/22's
Plastic sights, ewww! To be fair, many people will use a scope anyway.

I would always opt for a used older version in good shape. I have put uncounted thousands of rounds through mine (bought new in 1984 for $99) and I don't thinks its even close to being worn out. The rotary magazines are great, never had any malfunctions with them. So unless it was totally neglected, a used 10/22 should work fine. If you want to check the bore on a used one, lock the bolt open, remove the magazine and stick a small piece of white paper (business card, etc) in through the ejection port and look down the barrel. It's easy to get reflected light to bounce off the card and into the barrel. A well cared for 10/22 will last a lifetime.

They stopped using walnut for the stocks in the mid '80s, sigh! You can get the serial number breakdown off the Ruger website. Print it out and take it with you and you should be able to tell how old a used gun is.
Here's mine (yup, she's 25 this fall)

Dee, you've got a good sling, now all you need is a set of Tech-sights and you'd be all set for an Appleseed Clinic.

That is why I need 2 10/22's at some point. That, or a 22LR upper for my AR... (or 2...)

I managed to scrounge one from a guy who needed some cash.

Don't turn your nose up at the Marlin 795 either. It's got many of the modifications already in place that many people do to their 10/22's and the base price is about $70 less.

From what it sounds like, I'll do a little more leg work and look for an older model with the steel trigger guard....should be a fun weekend looking!

I like the idea of printing out the serial # breakdown and bringing it with.

Thanks!

I went to a bunch of different retailers looking for the perfect 10/22...nothing. Even the gun show in Forrest Lake was a stinker. I've decided to go back to Fleet Farm and pick up a new 10/22 with a synthetic stock for $206. Now to customize....
