I've heard people say that carrying the extra mag is so that if the first mag fails or causes a jam, you can eject and insert your spare and still have recourse to save your life.

And if the extra mag prepares you for a prolonged fire fight then that is a secondary benefit.

Like I said, I don't usually carry an extra mag though I think I should ... and perhaps I'll correct that some day.

I throw it in my front pocket when wearing jeans. It’s hardly noticeable.

Assume it would be a nice “extra” if needed.

Since I’m going to all the trouble to lug around approximately 30 ounces all day long, might just as well add a little more for the additional “protection” it offers.

My primary carry guns are Kahr P-9 and HKusp.45.I always have a spare mag in the car at least, usually on my belt.I think Jeff Cooper said the main reason to carry a spare mag was so that you don't have to walk home after a gunfight with an empty gun. This seems like a good enough reason!
Someone else made a comment that you should keep count of your shots fired, good luck!Maybe some can but I think the overwhelming majority will have no idea of the round count of a gunfight. If I ever hear the really loud CLICK when I expect a bang,I hope I have a reload.

At least in Minneapolis I'd count being able to go home unloaded lucky. I'd personally expect a manditory trip downtown.

Oh, there is no doubt that one should expect to get a ride in a squad car and probably a night in the klink, but I still feel it prudent to have a reload close by.At the very least,I would want a loaded gun while I wait for the cops to come, who knows, maybe the thug is a gang member who's friends are on the way , or some thugs come and start a turf war,I think there are many possibilities, after all, isn't that why we carry in the first place?

Alright, I'm convinced. I have the spare mag carrier that I'll start using.

Absolutely!

I carry a handgun "just in case". And have carried one for about 13 years, with a MN permit. I never had to draw it to defend myself, let alone reload it during or after a gunfight. Obviously, I hope I never have to. Even after all these years I still carry extra mags, "just in case". Both on my body and I also keep some in my car.
