I have (reluctantly ) accepted the idea that I need to add a 9mm to my collection for IDPA, this will probably not be a carry weapon but mostly a competition one.

At this point I know I don't want a Glock, I don't like the way they feel in my hand. I am thinking a sig 229 or possibly an XD 9 4".

What do you folks think?

Yes, except in this case it will be a second gun, I still intend to shoot my Pro size Kimber (Daily carry gun) in CDP class as well.

Just adding to the variety.

BTW: I have never shot IDPA, but am switching this year from USPSA to IDPA.....so is a Hi-Power 9mm also in the CDP category?

If you reload, you don't need a 9, since .40 s&w can be downloaded to the same 125 power factor for IDPA. That way you can use it as a "game" pistol with about the same recoil as a 9mm, or with full factory power hollow points as a defense weapon.

One other thing to remember is that unlike Glocks, XDs cannot be used in SSP class since they are classified as single action only. They can only be used in the tougher ESP class. CZs, Sigs, Glocks, and some others can be used in both classes.

Edit to add: HammAR, The BHP can only be shot in ESP class, CDP is solely for .45s, and generally 1911s.

Well as I am unsure to what you refer, all I am looking to do is shoot in multiple Divisions. I have already decided on a S&W 686 4" for SSR and am looking at a 9 for ESP or SSP to augment what I already shoot.

There are to the best of my knowledge any "points" in IDPA.

Why don't you get the Springfield EMP in 9mm? You like 1911s...

Though I suppose if you want a fullsize, I'd definitely go for the SIG Sauer P226, as I've found it a very comfortable, and accurate handgun, not to mention reliable. Expensive, though.

I do love my 1911's but am looking for a full sized 9mm, cheaper to shoot for skills training as well as another Division for IDPA. I am pretty convinced on either a 229/226 or the XD-9. Good excuse to go to the range and do some shooting.

I don't know crud about IDPA, but plan on starting it this year. In fact you can help me understand, If I shoot the following, what group or classification would I shoot:

1911 (45) Gov and/or Cmdr (CDP per above)
BHP (9) (ESP per above)
Will either of these qualify for BUG?
Glock G30 (45)
Bersa (380)

Hmmm, are you finally coming over from the dark side? Just kidding. I do not think that you can go wrong with any one of your choices. Try the XD I think that you may like it.

HammAR, correct for the first two. For BUG the requirement is a barrel less than 3.8" for a semi-auto or 3" for a revolver, and .32 caliber or higher. All mags are loaded to a max of 5 rounds to even the playing field with the J frame revolvers.

Note, unlike USPSA, IDPA doesn't allow any mags loaded over ten rounds, (or over eight for CDP, catering to the 1911s) for any string where reloads on the clock are an issue. The normal way to start a stage in SSP or ESP is with a mag of 10 in the gun, plus one in the pipe, safety on or decocked, holstered, and two mags of 10 in your mag holder. These and other somewhat contrived rules are designed to even the playing field and prevent equipment races. (Note, in some states there are still laws in place preventing owning mags over 10 rounds.)

I owned a 4" XD for awhile and loved the way it fir my hand.

I'm wondering if anyone here has tried the S&W M&P in .40? Even downloaded to fit into the division, the idea of the same gun for competition and SD is interesting. Arguments could be made that downloaded ammo performs and feels differently but the flash sight picture and trigger squeeze would be the same I guess.

Not that I can afford wither a new gun or a new hobby this year anyway but the idea is intriguing.

My dad was looking at a M&P Compact in .40 for a while but didn't like how the magazine lever hit his hand. Anyone here have one and want to go shooting sometime?

I shot someone1980's XD 9mm 5" Tactical today and it was REAL nice to shoot! Very accurate! I want one now! The XD's fit in my hand nicely.
