I'm as giddy as a school girl... Just picked up a new 642.
I have a feeling I'll be in a bad mood until I can get to the range to shoot this little pork chop...

I need to ask. is the j frame comfortable to shoot? I grew up with Ruger Blackhawk 357 and H&K 9 shot .22, bought a hi-point 9mm just to say I owned a semi-auto. Owned a real nice s&w mod. 19-4. It shot nice with 38's but didn't handle the 357's like the Ruger does.
I like (and plan to own) a Glock 26, but my loyalty lies in the 'church of the revolver' I just want to hear that 'yes' the j frames are fun to shoot and have as good or better performance than the 9mm. Am I asking too much?
Tex

I like my 642. Shoots good. Conceals great.
It should be noted that if you run a box of +P through it, you will feel it.

The J frame is smaller thus not as full a grip for some folks. It's also lighter and thus more felt recoil for some folks.
I think it's still fun to shoot but opinions vary. Those scandium jobs might not be much fun for long at the range but they're light enough to hav eon you ALWAYS and when the adrenaline dumps you won't notice

The heavier J-frames shoot great. The M60 is actually very nice.
Good looking J-frame.

Tex, I get the same accuracy out of my Taurus Mod. 85 Ultralite as I do from my S&W 9mm. Practice isn't as much fun but I've never had any problems putting 200rds through it even when my arthritis decides I've been feeling too good.
It doesn't feel as comfortable to me with the factory 2 1/2 finger grips but I actually like shooting it with the CT lasergrips.

Do any of you have both a 642 and a Ruger SP-101? I'm considering one or the other as a smaller carry gun. A 4-inch 1911 is nice but not practical in some instances.
I have no doubt the the 642 is lighter and comes with a better trigger. My choice would likely be DAO so as to get the hammer out of the way.

I don't have a 642, but I can tell you the SP101 is a great carry gun- mine goes most everywhere. I know Pat Cannon has one he likes as well- he may well also have a 642. Try PMing him if he doesnt see this.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Taurus 651?

I have a 442 (all black version of the 642) and love it as a pocket gun. I am somewhat concerned about the capability 0of the .38 special out of a 2 inch barrel but as a backup or what I refer to as a civilized carry gun it is a good solution.
I prefer my 4" 1911 but if I cannot carry that I will carry the 442.

Yep I like my SP, no I don't own a 642. I'm sure the 642 is great to carry -- it's 15 oz. vs. 25 for the SP101. It does make the SP a bit much for pocket carry, but in the waistband it's quite comfortable (especially compared to the 40 oz. 1911 I used to carry). And I like having .357 Magnum vs. .38 Special.
As far as triggers go, my Ruger is pretty smooth (In my opinion), but it is heavy, like about 16 pounds. Since I've been too broke to take it to a smith & too lazy to work on it myself, I choose to think of it as a safety feature.
