New Term for that:

"Cocked and Glocked"

Don't be put off by the sight of the hammer. The 1911 was designed to be carried cocked and locked- millions of draftees in several wars did so, and if there ever was an opportunity to discover any inherent danger with that pistol, combat with a bunch of draftees would have been it.

My XD has a striker- no visible hammer. It's just as "cocked" as my 1911 is- it's just not noticble, so to some it looks less "menacing".

If you do decide to carry that 1911, I know where you can get an excellent holster for it.

+1 I borrowed this one just before the barrel link in my old gun broke. It's a NICE holster but I didn't get to try it out much

Normal carry = SA 1911 Ultra Compact - MS SSII Holster - Beltman Bull Hide Belt

Alternative = SA 1911 SS Loaded 5" - Comp-Tac Infidel Holster - Beltman Belt

In House Back Ups = Ruger P90 45acp or Ruger Blackhawk 44 magnum

WTSHTF = 12 guage shotgun or 30.06 rifle

All that said you have to watch out for 1911's, they work and are extremely addicting.

Yes, I prefer a 4" over a 5". Reason is that the 4" seems more comfortable for me compaired to a 5" when carried in an iwb holster. The 5" seemed to push more into my side when setting down and seemed most uncomfortable in a car where a seat belt would push it up.

I grew when the gun of choice was the 1911 .45 ACP. Jeff Cooper and Mel Tappan were big contributors to my thought process. I have two, a Combat Commander and an enhanced SA Govt. Model.

That being said my carry guns are a 642 and a P226. Why? I don't shoot my 45s enough to be comfortable carrying them cocked & locked. I need to shoot them more. I thought about IDPA...even have holsters that would work. Just don't want to deal with the horses butts who are out to win at all costs.

If I may comment, it has been my experience that, in our club, that there are the fast folks and the regular folks. I have never seen one of the fast folks being less than helpful and cordial to all comers (as long as they were safe.) The same can be said of Minnetonka.

I don't know about the other clubs, but going by the people I have met, they would be the same way. Perhaps you had a bad experience in the past, give it another try, you might enjoy it.

That's a big part of why I started shooting IDPA. After the first year or two I almost always remembered to take the safety off. But not always, especially if something varied from the norm, like a stage where you start with gun in hand instead of drawing from the holster. This year I'm switching to a revolver, even though I'm less accurate with it -- at least so far.

If you come down to Faribault IDPA (on Wednesday nights starting in May), I think you will find a few real competitive guys among the group, but few if any actual horse butts. Those guys shoot IPSC, I think.

Hmm, that has nothing to do with being comfortable, it has to do with knowledge of the firearm and it's design. I believe that the cocked and locked 1911 is more safe than the ones that you prefer to carry.

IDPA is a game, I don't care what shooters say, it is a game, end of story. My holster is IDPA legal, my 1911 is just under the legal weight limit, and my ammo averages 15 fps over the power factor. Do I win all the time, no I don't, just ask some of these forum members. I do get laughed at under certain conditions because I am safety conscience and do what I have to do to stay that way (I can give specifics with a witness). I do not have any idea as to were you thought that you had to deal with me and that I was a horses butt that had to win at all costs?

Just to note, Faribault IDPA schedule is not yet out, but we shoot in the Mankato area on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. You can always watch for free, but as in the past, it is more fun to shoot. KCCC in Mankato has had 2 observers that decided to shoot after they turned up to watch. Same offer to all new IDPA shooters, I will supply the equipment to shoot and ammo to shoot our courses of fire, you just have to join our club.
