Hey All,

I've been cruising this forum for a little bit and figured I'd finally post.

I ran across this wonderful caliber and was wondering if anyone has ever experienced it up close.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.950_JDJ

Here's the website of the manufacturer, SSK:

http://www.sskindustries.com/cartridges.htm (there's a picture of it at the very bottom on the right)

I'd say that'd work for home defense, just have the bad guy try and shoot it.

Quote:
The cartridge drives its aforementioned 3,600 gr (230 g) bullet at approximately 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s). This yields a muzzle energy of 38,685 ft·lbf (52,450 J).

That's about three times the muzzle energy of a .50 BMG.

The cartridge is bigger than some squirrels I've seen.

Two guys defending a house...

"How many rounds you got left?"

"One."

"Only one? There's five guys lined up outside that door!"

"Damn, I was hoping for a challenge."

Not if you reload. I'm going to start picking up all the 20mm Vulcan brass I see at the range.

Hmmm, maybe if I brought a M61 to the next steel shoot we'd be able to beat Selurcspi at Man vs. Man...

I think bullet placement is the key.

You might be able to make do with a .44 Magnum.

Practice, practice, practice.

Which pretty much puts paid to the idea for those of us who don't want to invent a new rotator cuff.

Much more sensible, at least as far as you can stretch that term to fit cartridges like this, in the McMillan .50 FatMac, which is the same 20mm case shortened and necked down to normal .50 cal, and it's used for the unlimited 1,000 yard competitions. In general theory, it is a huge clone of the 22 PPC and 6mm PPC, which have become very popular for benchrest shooting. Short, fat cases provide for more uniform ignition, which is why the 22 PPC was invented to begin with.
