My father died some years ago and left a derringer to my brother chambered in 45-70.It was marked Alaskan Survival. No one has had the nerve to shoot the thing and the insuing discussion on if the Polar Bear was about to eat you if you would shoot the bear or yourself and if the real lethality of the round would be the bullet or the I would think incredible muzzle flash incinerating the bear. The actual barrel is maybe 3/8 inch and I thought it was comical that it actually has rifling in that 3/8 inch of barrel, Please have some fun with this topic. Thanks Bob :lol:

A 3/8" barrel in 45/70? I hurt just thinking about it. It almost sounds like something that was built because it could be built. I cannot imagine any practical use for such a thing other than to scare the poop out of anybody foolish enough to either shoot it or be near when some other fool shot it.

A friend is SD has an older 10 guage, I believe Remington, flare gun that is well built and, unlike modern flare guns, will chamber a full size shell. He's a big guy and a little crazy. A number of years ago he loaded up a full size 10 guage round and fired it. The recoil cut him right down to the bone on the lower joint on his thumb and he never fired it again. Later another friend of his, who obviously thought he was bigger and tougher, wanted to shoot it. He was told the whole story and warned that it'd cut him to the bone but he just had to do it. He did fire it, with predicable results, to the bone.

If you keep it around, sooner or later there will be someone crazy enough to shoot it.

The first time I fired my 50 BMG rifle was pretty scarry, I'd never fired one before I bought it. The recoil isn't any worse than a full load of 12 guage but the shock wave off the muzzle brake is pretty intimidating!

Her's a URL for the websight, they don't list the 45-70 here but it looks the same. Perhaps it's discontinued ??? I can only hope.

My .45 Colts give me a Huckleberry Hound-Dog Howdy each time I fire them, and they're full-sized revolvers. I would not relish the thought of shooting one in 45/70 since the cartridge would be nearly the size of those derringers pictured.
