Am thinking of getting a new rifle in .223 Rem, but I do not like the AR platform from a design perspective. Just to dirty...

Has anyone here'bouts had any experience with the Sig 556? Wish it came in .308...

Check the guns group on livejournal.com someone did one a while ago and was not all that impressed, just another AR.

I wonder where they got their opinion from? The 556 will not be released to the public until after the 1st of the year as it's still in testing. Here's what I know from the LE rep I deal with at Sig: The stock will be a collapsible one, the same as the AR. The mags will interchange with the AR. The top rail is interchangeable/removeable to allow various sight set ups. The price will be comparable or a tad less, to the standard AR patrol rifle.

The SG550/551/552 are considered by many people to be excellent weapons, and Sig are trying to get the 556 up there with them.

I hope to gather enough conkers to get one when they are released, but I know there's a damn big line in front of me!

http://community.livejournal.com/guns/738169.html found it. Still an overpriced AR15.

The review cited is from January '06.

Quote:
Bottom line, the 55x series is a pretty sweet rifle. It addresses the main failing of the AR platform, i.e. the nasty gas system. With an AR, different barrel lengths cause other issues as well, whereas with a gas piston/op rod, you can use any length of barrel with no change in the gas system, because the gas piston length stays fixed. That said, if there's any issue with the 55x series and the ammo you are using or the conditions you are using it under, you can adjust the system to keep running.

So if they offer this rifle for sale in the USA to lowly little pukes like myself, I'd certainly be tempted. If I didn't already have two ARs, I know I'd buy one. That's probably the only thing keeping me from just signing up for a 550 right now.

Seems to me he liked it...unless I was reading the wrong review?

Some of the specs have changed too, see: http://sigarms.com/Products/ShowCatalog ... ductid=114

With a list price of 1299 (probably at least 1 - 200 less in reality once distributors start competing for sales). against anywhere from 995 to 1895 for an AR15 (depending on spec), it appears to hit right in the middle, maybe a touch higher, of the price range for a quality 16" semi-auto carbine.

No rifle is going to be universally popular, but to dismiss it out of hand before it hits the road and has been objectively reviewed is strikingly similar to the: 'there is no round but .45, and ACP is his prophet' type of stance.

I saw one at the SOCCOM Show - nice rifle - gas piston operation.

For $1200 it seems like a bargain to me. If you go to buy an AR Lower with all of the guts and all that crap - it is like $300 or something like that...

Then you go and get a POF Upper with the gas piston for about $900-1000 each with a standard BBL that is of ho hum quality and you could have bought the sig with a hammer forged bbl and the piston operation and as far as I am concerned better reputation.

I do not care for AR's as I find them to be wholly unreliable and I have never shot one that worked 100% all the time - however - I have shot some of the SIG Rifles that were 100% all day everyday.

Once an AR gets the least bit dirty (Shoot wolf ammo sometime) you start to have problems.

What really struck me as interesting about the Sig 556 is the lack of a forward assist. It makes me feel a lot more comfortable that Swiss design engineers don’t feel that this goofy stick is necessary.

No experience or knowledge of the 556 but if what you really want is a .308, why not one of the STG58 or other FN/FAL varients?

for example: http://www.dsarms.com/

Why do people keep calling it an AR? It looks sorta like one, sure...

It's really not an AR-15 at all... It's based on the SIG 550 series rifles, and the internals are all different.

Though I agree, it's expensive for my tastes, and I think I'll ultimately end up with a more conservative AR-15. It's scary to think the AR-15 is already 'grandpa's gun'.
glock+ipod showed me his AR-15, essentially laid out like a standard M16-A2 which I'm already familiar with, and the price seemed right...

Maybe if you hang one up over the fireplace, smoke a pipe, and tell stories to your grandkids, you can dispel the fear of the 'black gun' in the next generation.
