Anyone care to share what they are carring for 9mm, why and where you purchase the said ammo. It's time for me to do some research and some time at the range for my carry choice. I have no idea where to start :?

I'll be shooting a XD 4 inch if it matters.

I have "First Defense" 147 gr. JHP. I think Hornady TAP is pretty available (and probably my next defense ammo) (Cabella's and at ranges)...I'd say any reputable cartridge maker that specifies the ammo for defense/self-defense. I have no knowledge of "+p" or "+p+", so I don't use it. Otherwise search online for different brands/styles. I would say definitely stick w/JHP (jacketed-hollow point), but I know there is a company out there that makes FMJ (full-metal jacket) ammo that expands rapidly...can't think of it now though.
here's a handgun mag article about the hornady ammo

This link has ammo for .380 vs 9mm, but lists ammo velocity/penetration for the 9mm.

this link has lots of articles.

That's the best I can find right now. Otherwise check the ammo manufacterer's sites, those are pitches, but it's better than nothing. Others, feel free to chime in.

{edit} I found the EFMJ ammo...it's made by Fedral:

Federal Hydra-Shock low recoil
Streikers.com (sp?) (local supplier)

UMC FMJ - Low recoil - good for IDPA
Fleet Farm, CheaperThanDirt.com, Gander

Winchester FMJ - Little bit higher velocity then UMC - large recoil - Cheap
Wal-Mart

thanks for the links, looks like I have some good reading to do 8)

I should specify I'm looking for carry/self defense ammo not really plinking ammo.

When I purchased my 3" XD9 at Gander I bought a box of 147gr. Speer Gold Dot and a box of 115gr. Corbon +P. I haven't shot either yet. I know, I know, practice with what you carry. Well, I can't afford to kiss nearly a buck goodbye with every mash of the trigger so I've been practicing with Remington UMC FMJ I bought on sale at Dick's. I have been carrying the Gold Dot. I like the idea of a heavier, slower bullet. I'm concerned that at close range, the lighter +P's could easily over-penetrate. Then I find out the 115gr. +P's are what the cops carry so I don't know what to think.

Looks like I've got more questions than answers, once again.

Followed some links did some reading, I think I'm going to try some of those 115 +p corbon's if Gander sells them that would be really handy for me, maybe a bit expensive to know if the are reliable, but it's probably all worth it in the long run. They sound like a good mix, powerful yet the jhp should expand and slow the round down enough to worry "less" about going through something.

yet I still got more reading to do.

Check out these prices
http://www.streichers.com/Default.aspx

They are local so if you want to pick it up to save shipping you can.

I have about 300 rounds of Federal Hydra-Shock through my XD9 3", and 50 rounds through my 5". Both have work perfectly.

You shoot the 147gr or the 124gr?

Are the 124gr's +P?

Had a chance to shoot a ballistic vest this summer during a Defensive handgun course.

Shot Fed Self-Defence and Classic, Speer Gold Dot and Rem Golden Sabre's.

We also shot them at night. Of them all, the Golden Sabre's were the ones I settled for my carry ammo.

Low flash and they did the most damage to the vest.

I have been shooting and carrying Winchester RA9TA's for some time

127 +P+ at 1350fps from my G17...

That is about as good as it gets.

The upside to using Fedaral Ammo is that you can buy it locally as pointed out above, but more importantly you can get 50 rds of premium ammo for the cost of what 20/rd boxes cost. This alone, the affordability factor, allows you to function test in your weapons platform and not break the bank! And, I tend to think most will agree function and accuracy checks take more then twenty rounds of ammo. But, if you guys are so flush with funds as to afford the other stuff my hat is off to you.

The bad guy is not going to know the difference what he gets hit with, as long as the rounds are COM and reach vital areas.

Never said I was flush enough to use Golden Sabre for practice ammo.

I generally will use Blazer Brass, WWB, UMC value packs or whatever else I can get on the cheep.

For carry though, I use Golden Sabre. And I figured that out in less than one 20 rd box.

I carry a Glock 19 and put 250 rounds of carry ammo through it before I was satisfied. I carry Federal Hydra-Shok. I believe it is 147 grain, but I can not find the case to verify.

I practice with cheap stuff, but shoot the carry ammo once per year. I have shot over 500 rounds of the Federal with nary a problem, and the best thing is I can hardly tell a difference in recoil between the cheap stuff and the good stuff. Plus, Streicher's is the place to buy any carry ammo. Their price blows the compitition away.
